I have been told that when I sing I sound something like Lou Reed - and that's ok, but he probably wouldn't make too many top-ten lists of vocalists. To me, Carl Wilson, of the Beach Boys, had one of the sweetest voices ever. Unaided by falsetto, well maybe not totally, he could just hit notes that most guys could only dream of. His brother, Brian, was also gifted with a great voice, so let's not rule him out just yet. John Lennon could sing with anyone. Harmonies, solos, ballads, flat out rock - and rage! He had it all, and may well be the most overlooked vocalist out there.

But for some reason, I keep thinking of Todd Rundgren. If you're familiar with his backing vocals that were mostly, but not exclusively, provided for his own singing I think this guy is a winner. If you're familiar with his recordings, I think you'll know where I'm coming from. He has a gutsy sort of way of getting himself across and as a writer and a singer. His lyrics are pretty honest. As were Lennon's.

I guess I'd go with either Todd or John with a tip of the hat to the Wilsons.

John Hiatt. I love that raspy thing he's got. Maybe even Warren Zevon.
