In a relatively recent Simpsons episode Lisa threw away her sax after considering if any jazz musicians lived long and happy lives. Maybe these nonagenarians would have changed her mind.
"SINATRA really went crazy when he broke up with Ava - Artie was married to her first. One day Ava came running into Artie's apartment to hide, and Sinatra came in with one of his henchman. Sinatra had a gun. Artie made fun of him. He said, 'What do you think, you're HUMPHREY BOGART? She's not here. And if she was, she wouldn't want to see you.' "
Jay McShann recorded a luscious version of Eddie Heywood's relatively seldom-recorded tune, "Land of Dreams" a few years back. McShann was in his 80's then, but still played wonderfully. Unfortunately, it's not out there on YouTube. This version is, however. It features an all-star group of Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Jimmie Smith on drums, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on sax. It was only a couple of years before this 1977 outing that I was fortunate enough to share a table with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis at a small bar next to a small concert hall after a Count Basie orchestra concert. I was just a college kid at the time, and Davis was kind enough to join some friends and me for some--actually quite a few--drinks. Pretty heady stuff for a young college kid--sitting in a bar with a whole band of jazz legends and sharing a table with one of them.
