Remember MTV's Unplugged? If a network brought a similar format show today, what artist under the age of 40 has the talent to perform with no electronic help, no back-up singers, no dancers, and no lipsyncing?
I love the Unplugged concerts. To me, it showcased the versatility of a musician. Eric Clapton's Unplugged really got me into it. More specifically, it was the way that he adapted his electric songs into the acoustic atmosphere.
As for the question, I can't really answer as I don't listen to modern music.
Sevendust is doing an acoustic album, Godsmack did an acoustic EP, and bands like Shinedown and Bullet For My Valentine have released acoustic renditions of songs on deluxe editions. It's not uncommon for rock bands to do that now.
