I don`t mean your standard cover that sticks to it`s original genre. More those that crossed over fom one to another. The Sid Vicious version of My Way would be a good example. The idea came to mind when I remembered this version of Get It On. I`ve said before the T.Rex version was very much what got me into playing guitar but certainly isn`t sacrosanct. I make no apologies for saying I think this was pretty damn good. The girls with the kazoos near the end crack me up,, So,,,Best and/or Worst??

I always loved T Rex; I am glad that there has been some resurgence of interest in that band.
For really fun covers, check out Richard Cheese. The guy totally cracks me up.Lounge Against the Machine

Best Covers: Leon Russell's cover of the Rolling Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash

Tina Turner's cover of CCR's Proud Mary

The Futureheads cover of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love

Hendrix doing Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower

Jack White of the White Stripes covering Ball and Biscuit (edited to add: I think this is a traditional blues song, if I am wrong, please, someone correct me)

Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt

Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World

Roxy Music's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy (what a pleasant surprise, I just heard this a year or so ago)
************************************************** *******
Worst Covers:
Manfred Mann's cover of Springsteen's Blinded By the Light

Guns and Rose's cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door (I'd rather hear fingernails scratching on a blackboard)

Whatever it was (sampling etc) that Puff Daddy did to the original Police song, Every Breath You Take

I hated Stevie Nicks' rendition of Silent Night

Lenny Kravitz's cover of The Guess Who's American Woman (his version took all the sting out of that song)

Speaking of T-Rex, I like the Power Station cover of Get It On.

I think one of the best covers was done by the Rolling Stones in 1964. It's All Over Now, written by Bobby and Shirley Womack.

From Wikipedia:

The song was played to the Rolling Stones during their first North American tour in June 1964 by New York radio DJ named Murray the K. After the band heard the song they recorded it a few days later at Chess Studios in Chicago. Years later Bobby Womack said in an interview that he told his manager that he did not want the Rolling Stones to record their version of the song, that he told Mick Jagger to get his own song. His manager convinced him to let the Rolling Stones record a version of the song. Six months later when he received the royalty check for the song he told his manager that Mick Jagger can have any song he wants.

The first of many killer tunes

There are some songs that should stand alone, like the Righteous Brothers "You Lost That Loving Feeling". Hall and Oates covered it and I'd rather they didn't. Two great remakes are the Four Tops "Walk Away Renee", originally done by the Left Banke. Another good one is the Ramones version of "Time Has Come Today", done by the Chambers Brothers in September 1968. 1968-YES!!!!!!!!
