Do you mean the cuíca? Though of all the sounds it can make I wouldn't have included the owl...take a look here.

The sense of the lyrics is a part of the enjoyment for sure. But the actual sounds of the words are part of the music itself, and you don't need to understand what they mean to enjoy their contribution of the music.

In any case, a large part of the time it take me several hearings to understand pop music sung in English! Rock singers often sound like they are singing in a dialect of High Middle Neanderthal.

Yes that must be it. I would have never guessed it was a drum.

Not understanding the lyrics doesn't bother me. It adds mystery. Besides as they say music is a universal language.

I have come to realize one of my favorite types of Brazilian music is called bossa nova. All music in the samba category is very enjoyable to listen to.

It is capable of so many sounds, and it adds a truly distinctive touch to much Brazilian music. Like you, I never guessed it was a drum...I assumed these might even be vocalized sounds from band mements.

Music from the Nordeste (if you have not already heard it) is different from samba and bossa nova. Forró is maybe the most distinctive form from that area, reminds me a bit of Cajun music. The city of Bahia has been a musical hotspot in Brazil.

There is a paperback book that might interest you. Brazilian Sound by Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha. It's easy to read, not too long and filled with photos. For all that it may be somewhat outdated, it nevertheless gives all the forms of Brazilian music and hits the highlights.
