I've been to 100's of concerts, probably most of you have as well, seen all the major great bands. What was the best concert you ever went to and why? It doesn't mean it was your favorite band or artist, just talking concerts here.
Though it's been years, when someone says concert I immediately remember seeing Tina Turner and think it was the best concert I ever went to. She just really gave it her all in a way no one else I've seen did and there was something about the audience and the way she seemed to make it 'their' concert.
I've been to nearly 200 concerts of virtually every genre over 30 years, and excluding my faves Santana, DMB and Rush, I got to see this 1991 tour twice and both shows were absolutely breathtaking. Eight legendary musicians on one stage, firing on all cylinders:
That's a tough one. There was Springsteen at Red Rocks--twice.
There was a fairly recent Richard Thompson show.
I'm going to go with the Who, Mammoth Gardens, Denver, June 9, 1970.
I, all of 16 years old, sat/stood directly in front of the stage.
Maybe Sugarloaf opened--I know I saw them at Mammoth, but I can't remember if it was that night.
I was there to see the Who.
It was a hot and sweaty show. The guys in the band were in their prime.
Tommy was played.
Keith Moon was up to his usual drumstick tricks.
Roger, in full 70's regalia, performed ably, as did John.
I shook hands with Pete Townshend.
It just doesn't get much better than that.
Well for memories, I guess the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl in the 60's. (Imagine, the tickets were only $10.00) That was my first concert.
But for performance it has to be Queen in the early 1970's. Freddy Mercury was amazing.
The only person I went to see twice was Andres Vollenweider who was a harpist in the 80's. His music was fantastic.
Okay I know I'm a little odd but I've only been to three concerts in my life and two of those were the Moody Blues.
However, my favorite concert was a Scottish band called Runrig who held a concert at Ontario Place in Canada. I'll tell you something, for a Scottish folk band they were something else. Not one person was sitting in their seats, we were all dancing and clapping and cheering - through the whole concert. They were truly not what I expected at all. Truly amazing
Uli Roth at the Country Club (Reseda, CA) in the mid-1980's. His playing that night was just so elegant and emotionally on point that I was absolutely blown away. I only wish I had a chance to see the Scorpions when he was still in the band, but oh well.
Motorhead at the Country Club on the Ace of Spades tour (1981?) made me deaf for about three days afterward and is still the loudest gig I have ever been to. Bloody great show.
Queensryche at Long Beach when they were opening for Kiss was an amazing set, too. Some of the sweetest twin harmony guitar work I have ever seen or heard. I saw them several other times both as an opener and has a headliner and they never matched that night in LB for me. They were still damned solid, though on those other occasions.
Tito Puente at the Kool Jazz Festival back in the 80's was my favorite.
