I been away on the east coast for the past 3 weeks. Got to visit a lot of old friends, many who were fellow musicians. We all played together at various times throughout our lives but lost touch in our old age as we all scattered.

I got to jamb with some friends who were good musicians in their own right. But the strange thing is they all have kids now. Teenagers. Teenagers who were playing guitars, drums and so on to Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Doors, Deep Purple and so on. And they knew the words to these songs as well as us old fogies do.

When I asked these young people why they are not playing wrap crap and hippity hoppity fruity noise like others their age, they all responded with "This is what kids listen to and it's because of Guitar Hero". Now I heard of this stupid toy but can we credit this toy with bringing back real music....yet? Maybe even bury that wrap trash forever?

Any of you have young ones who play classic rock on this Guitar Hero? Are these kids once and for all realizing that timed poetry is not music after hearing and actually playing real music?

I really don't mean to derail or anything, but is this a rap jab?

First, music is what the public determines it to be. I loathe rap, too, but to a great swath of the younger public, that is music. Remember that a lot of people in the 50's said that rock 'n' roll was garbage and the end of civilization, fill in your own remembrance of hysterias past.

Music is a communication medium that, like language, changes over time.

But just to be a devil's advocate here, I have lurked on some of the Harmony Central musicians forums (I'm an amateur guitar player) and some have remarked that bar owners have been telling cover bands to start dropping some of their classic rock repetoire and begin playing stuff like Green Day, All American Rejects, etc.

So, to a degree, there may be a disconnect between what musicians or those who aspire to be such listen to (plus the classic rock period was the golden age of the rock star) and what the wider contemporary teenage and young adult population favors. That disconnect was certainly evident in the 1950's and we may be seeing it now.

Good points. We all know wrap is not music and I didn't want this to turn into another war over whether it is or not. As a musician myself who feels like he gets around some and personally knows a good number of musicians who know what music is, I despise your example of bar owners telling us what we want to hear. That also goes for Clear Channel telling the public what they want to hear. And of course we all know how gullable the public is, that is why they vote. They will believe anything told to them and later when they learn they have been scammed they just sort of brush it off and do it again. I call that self scamming.

What my intent here is would be to see if parents see their kids taste change from timed poetry with profanity to music due to the popularity of the Guitar Hero toy which is breaking all kinds of sales records.

To get back on topic, it has sparked an intrest with my 10 year old, even my 4 year old sings Highway Star when he's playing. My boys now reconize Beastie Boys, The Who, Nirvana, Stones, The Clash etc... when its on the radio.

I crack up watching the boys play, I'll even join in with them. There something very funny about jamming to Ballroom Blitz with a bunch of 10 year olds, vocals and all. I even hear them argue about what song to play, "Let's play Tom Sawyer!", "No let's do Iron Madien!"

One time (at band camp ) they asked me play drums to "Run to the Hills", when the chorus kicked all the boys in the room started singing....RUN TO THE HIIIIIILLLSS......as loud as they could, I almost couldn't play from laughter. Life is good.

I dated this 19-year old girl not too long ago. She'd listen to a good bit of of semi-obscure 70's music, like Blue Oyster Cult or the Outlaws, and knew all these obscure songs, but at the same time knew nothing about hugely popular bands like the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, etc..

Eventually I figured out that everything she knew about 1960's, 70's, and 80's music was straight from Guitar Hero.

Truthfully, real music is classical. Rock music that most of us enjoy is not real by any stretch. By and large it is all nonsense. This has to be acknowledged.

Guitar Hero needs to expose kids to the great 70's-80's New Wave-Alternative gems like REM, The Smiths, The Police, Elvis Costello, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banchees, The Pixies, Mission Of Burma, Pylon, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, and so many others. Enough of this classic rock brainwashing!
