Growing up I was slow to mature. I was 4 for most of 1980 and 14 for most of 1990. I didn't have many close friends who were age peers, so spend lots of time hanging out with adults or just myself. The adults (teachers, parents/volunteers) turned me on to smooth jazz/new age. I liked David Lanz (solo or with Paul Speer), Skywalk, Exchange, Kenny G, Ray Lynch, and others.
I am all over the place with my music tastes now: indie, ambient (drone, ambient techno), old jazz, and recently 80's and early 90's pop and rock (mainly alt rock). I love the Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, New Order, Men Without Hats, The Kinks, The Hooters, etc.
So maybe if I had followed trends of peers, I'd have been mainstream with a punkish edge? Dunno. Interesting to think about.
