The Crossing, the stellar debut by Scotland's Big Country, is forty years old.
Guitarist-vocalist Stuart Adamson (RIP) and guitarist Bruce Watson achieved their signature bagpipes tone via the MXR Pitch Transposer (pedal). They also used the Ebow, a device that vibrates guitar and bass strings and thus creates a limitless sustain and ensemble-like tone.
Big Country's rhythm section of Tony Butler (bass & vocals) and Mark Brzezicki (drumkit & vocals) was one of the best.
On February 17, 1984, Big Country performed the eight-minute-long album closer, "Porrohman," on The Tube.
In the Eighties, by no choice of mine, I listened to my teenager's music. Daughter favored Guns n Roses and Led Zeppelin. The whole household woke every morning to "Whole Lotta Love" whether we wanted to or not.
