I hear the term "hipster music" tossed around a lot, but what does this term actually mean? What makes a particular band appeal to hipsters, anyway?

I haven't read that list closely but two things struck me as funny. KRS-One is hipster music? Really? I guess he's a name to be dropped. I was obsessed with BDP like 18 years ago. And Superchunk should be considered AGING hipster music!

Read this article and you'll understand why KRS-One is considered hip by hipsters.

Haha, that's pretty funny. I especially liked this:

“Last night, I poured myself a glass of Shiraz and put Charlie Parker on the Bose. It was so relaxing, I wish I had a fireplace.”

I know it's funny and jokey but the author contadicts him/herself by claiming that white people will talk about an experience they had in a suburban high school, and then by saying that they will try to convince others that they would have liked something when it was relevant.

Still, good stuff!

I wonder if by hipster they mean at any given time what is the music that "hipsters" or fans of non-pop music are listening to?

Superchunk would not be hipster now but in the early 90’s it would have been.

Well, that self-described "Mr. Hipster" list has bands on there from decades ago as well as within the past few years current, so I don't think so.

I never would put John Vanderslice on that list, for instance, but that's more of a personal issue of mine....then again, I'm not a person that would ever call myself a 'hipster' and make a blog about it...

That's an odd list. CKY? Isn't that a band that's somehow associated with those guys from the tv show "Jackass"? Seems to me more like sadistic, toilet humored high school kid music more then hipster music. The Go-Gos? Really? (Full disclosure, "Beauty and the Beat" is my favorite pop record of all time) But hey, one guy's hipster is another guy's mainstream slave I guess.
