I still have mad respect for The Who, based on my comments in the OP, but I was REALLy Disappointed in the halftime show. Looked like a bunch of really old men out there (which they are), but they really didn't do much with it. I saw an interview before the game, Pete wanted to do a couple/few songs and do them well, but he "deferred" to Roger to do the Medley.
They still have a very prolific history, but I was disappointed in the show.
They sounded pretty darn good. Daltrey can still hit the high notes. It's amazing when you realize that their first hit in the USA, My Generation, came out 46 years ago! IMO, the drummer was better technically than Keith Moon (I know, it's heresy), and the bassist was quite good too.
I'm not a fanatical Who fan, but they made some good stuff. I Can See For Miles was a great record.
I enjoyed seeing them just because they are legends. Does anybody remember a Roger Daltrey solo hit from around 1980 called "Free Me"? I loved that song and haven't heard it in almost 30 years.
I saw the entire performance for the SuperBowl spot and was totally shocked down to my toes. I kept asking my son "Who is playing? Who is the band?" Wow! Awful!
A Super Bowl spot should have been more considered and reserved for talent. Those guys - yup, older guys and I had (the sound off!!) been watching his lips singing - awful! LOL!
Shame! A SuperBowl game is looked forward to each year. Bad planning coming from a MUSIC Moderator!
The only thing that saved it was the distraction from the light show!
Pete jumping, I thought his hips would explode!
Was the bass player his son? Looked like him.
I LOVE their music but you know ya just gotta retire with grace. BonJovi would have been perfect or even Jay-z!
Most of the ads were terrible also.
Good game thought!
I really enjoyed the halftime show they put on. I've never been a fan of the Who, but I think they were very entertaining. Sure, Pete Townsends voice sounded pretty bad and they were missing harmonies from the late John Entwistle. But Roger Daltrey belted it and brought out his harmonica, which rocked. And the drummer Zak Starkey (Ringo's son) was fantastic on the drums. I enjoyed it!
