I remember a melachony little melody from Mr. Yankovic about his friend Mr. Frump who was stuck in an iron lung. It really brought tears to my eyes...from laughing!!!

YouTube - "Weird Al" Yankovic - Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung

Only song I am aware of that is dedicated to skunks is about dead ones.

YouTube - Dead Skunk

As we're starting to veer into novelty songs and the like.

A song about a nightlight, it actually got in the top-10 in "Modern Rock Hits" or something.

YouTube - They Might be Giants-Birdhouse In Your soul

Self-explanatory.

YouTube - Carl Douglas - Kung fu fighting(original)

Ditto

YouTube - Elements by Tom Lehrer

I don't recall too many songs dealing with the whole walking like an Egyptian issue, a not often discussed medical condition of the mid 80s

AFAIK this is the only song about Gerald Ford:

YouTube - James Brown - Funky President

Although I wouldn't exactly consider Ford to be "funky" ):

Just looking through Grammy nominees, pop-charts, etc for topics that sound odd. The following is not necessarily my kind of music.

Oceania by Bjork - It's apparently about life evolving from the ocean and is based on a poet.

YouTube - Björk - Oceania

Telstar by the Tornadoes - Instrumental named for a communications satellite.

YouTube - Telstar by The Tornados

Ode to Billie Joe - Maybe the song subject isn't that unusual, but it fits some of the rare cases of "banal in music" in that much of the actual lyrics involve people eating dinner and discussing chores.

YouTube - Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billy Joe

This one might be too close to the love theme to be on this list but it was written for the movie The Crossing Guard.

The Crossing Guard After a hit-and-run takes the life of a man's daughter, breaking his heart and destroying his marriage, he plots revenge on the man.

YouTube - Bruce Springsteen - Missing

Another one by Bruce - Streets of Philadephia - one of the first movies and songs about the plight and death of a man with aids.
