Well hello y'all, thanks for viewing!

My wife and I (both RN's) are considering relocation from Houston to Nashville. We are in Nashville now, visiting, looking around, exploring possibilities. We will be here until Saturday morning, but would continue to appreciate advice far after. I've read a few threads, and see there are more than a few more addressing this topic. Being that I am here and for limited time, please help me sift through all that info.

Here's what we're looking for:
1. We want to live rurally, but would like to keep commute times to major hospitals in the area less than 30 min.
2. Good schools
3. Mostly conservative neighbors. Middle class. Quite. Friendly.
4. Homes on large (what we consider large) plots of land, roughly 5-10 acres.
5. Access to shopping etc, but not to close.
6. Pretty nature, not pretty concrete.
7. High safety, low violent crime.
8. $200-300K range

What say you, friends? I appreciate your thoughtful responses. Please spare the odd rude, unhelpful, judgemental, or accusatory responses for someone else. Thanks so much!

Perfect. My wife and I are in the same sort of situation - both RN's planning to relocate to Nashville from . . . . Detroit, of all places. I think anything would be an improvement from here. Anyway, while your waiting for someone to help you, maybe you could help me. The pay in Detroit I know is just a bit less than in Houston area (we have a friend that worked ICU at Baylor). What have you found to be true of nurse wages in Nashville? From what I can decipher, it seems like nurses get paid 3 or 4 dollars less an hour in Nashville, but their different shift diff's are quite a bit more. Somewhere pays like $6hr shift diff for midnights and $4hr for weekend premium. I'm so curious to hear what you've found. Although, I don't think it would be a deal breaker if what I listed was accurate - Nashville and the surrounding area is so beautiful.

Thanks,

Andy

You might check out the Long Hollow Pike area that connects the northern parts of Goodlettsville, Hendersonville, and Gallatin. Schools zone to either Beech or Station Camp clusters and both are great. Just take I-65 north to Long Hollow exit an turn right. Some roads to check out for properties with acerage would be Hogan's Branch, Center Point, New Hope, Latimer, St. Blaize, and Neals ln. The end of Long Hollow in gallatin connects back to TN 386 (Vietnam Vets Bypass) which will take you back to Nashville
quickly.

In some areas, that price range would cover a lot without a house. But I would suggest Rutherford County for access to hospitals in Murfreesboro and Smyrna.

Here is a sample:

Yeah, we too would be taking a slight pay cut, as well as having to leave the Texas Medical Center. But to find what we are looking for would be worth it, for sure.

I will check out Long Hollow and Rutherford County! Thanks for the advice. What about Ashland/Pleasantville? Opinions?

Thanks Again!

The Cheatham Schools are definitely not as good. You'd also be a longer drive from shopping and hospitals. But Cheatham County is a beautiful area and one of the most rural parts of the metro.

I think what you'll find is that you'll have to prioritize land and schools. Better schools/less land. More land/lesser schools. That's not always true, but it is sort of a rule of thumb I think.

That said, I concur with vivelafrance's recommendation of Long Hollow Pike area. I would also recommend looking at White House in Sumner County. Sumner County has great schools and you should be able to find a good amount of land in White House. The best Sumner Co Schools are closer to Hendersonville, but White House is fine too.

As for land, you might also look into Robertson County. The school system is not as good however.

It's about a 40-minute drive, but how about Pegram or Fairview (Southwest of town)?

I found 5-10 properties in your price range in those towns via a search on Realtor.com.

Are you originally from Houston or have you lived in other areas of the country? I ask only because Nashville does get *occasional* ice storms that make driving extremely hazardous. I think we had 3-5 icy days last year.

As a nurse, obviously you still have to come work even if an ice storm hits. It's just something to think about when you're deciding where to live -- how hilly/narrow/winding are the roads? Do you have to take a lot of back roads to get to a main road that would be plowed/salted?

Also, you're probably visiting Nashville at the most comfortable time of year. It gets a LOT colder in the winter and a LOT hotter in the summer. You're used to heat in summer, but the cold (November to March) may be a shock. Obviously, the reverse may be true for the RNs thinking of relocating from Detroit!

Best of luck with your job search, housing search and relocation plans

A lot depends on where you work. If you work in downtown Nashville (Davidson County), I like Hendersonville for most of your criteria, if you work in Franklin (Williamson Co) Nolensville, Fairview are good bets, Rutherford Co-I would go with Murfreesboro. All have good schools.
