I am currently an 8th grade student in Williamson county. My parents are getting a divorce, and my mother and I are moving into Nashville. I've been doing research and Hume Fogg is a lottery magnet school, and I understand that applications were due over a month ago and the drawing is this month. I'm also not moving into Nashville for another 3 months. I would really like to know if there is any other way I could go to Hume Fogg in the 2013-2014 academic school year. If not, is there in any other public school in Metro that I could go to for the one year before I can apply. Also I have a 4.0 gpa and scored all advanced on the TCAP. I'm positive I would get accepted.

You can always call and put your name on the list, but you'll be at the bottom of the waitlist for HF. Just because you have the scores doesn't mean you'll get accepted. You have to have scores and win the lottery.

I would try to move somewhere zoned for Hillsboro

Congrats to you and your school system for the correct usage: "currently". The majority of adults and maybe even the majority of "journalists", and columnists on the web might have instead incorrectly written: "presently".

Someone mentioned Hillsboro and Hillwood, but I think Overton is still in the top 3 of Davidson county non-magnet high schools just like it was in the '60's. Hume Fogg was in the scholastic low tier back then. But since I don't live there any more I'm not a top tier source of advice. When I attended VU a girl I dated was studying molecular biology and had graduated from Stratford, seemingly a pretty happening school back then. I attended Hillwood for grades 7~9 , and transferred to MBA for 10~12. My years at Hillwood were not bad at all. MBA, BGA, and Harpeth Hall dominated the prep school arena at that time, Ensworth didn't school beyond 8th grade. Does anyone know if there are any foundations or the like that can help with tuition to these schools?

Well, things have changed a bit since then. Hume Fogg (along with MLK) are top 100 public schools nationally (HF comes in at 36 in the latest rankings).

But they are magnet schools.

A lot of the big metro high schools are tough to gauge. Hillsboro easily draws from the nicest overall district in town, but a lot of those in the nicer areas send their kids to private schools. Still Hillsboro has a good "reputation."

Based on how they were represented at UT, I would say Overton, Hillwood, and Hunters Lane all produce a fair amount of quality students.

The only elite high schools are the magnet schools, though. If you can get into them, wonderful.

To the OP...there is really no way to guarantee entry into Hume Fogg. The problem is, you and every other smart kid wants to go there. Meeting the requirements is only half the battle.

Hillsboro is probably a good option in the short term. And I don't think it would melt your brain to go to Overton or Hillwood.

Here's a detailed map that shows the current school zones. A few things always change from year to year.

Good luck.
