the irony of Metro Water issuing backflow notices while planning on burying hazardous materials near the floodzones in Salemtown is just too much for me....

Okay, so I called American Backflow today, (thanks to captain obvious who told me to call -but since I got the notice after business hours Friday, i could not call and thought the friendly people on the forums here would help....) and here's what they said -

Since I have a sprinkler/irrigation system, I am subject to a mandatory test each year. It is a $42 charge for them to come out, billed to Metro Water. Since I have not de-winterized my system, it triggered a fail.

This means, by law, I have to pay another $42 for them to come out in a few days to "retest", because the water was not on to the system. If I do not have the water turned on by then, Metro Water will come and put a lock on it so I can not use it.

So, I have a sprinkler system, which I did not know I had when I bought the house. Every year, if I don't use it, they're going to come and retest it - and charge me $42. The only way out is to dig up the whole thing.

This is just ridiculous.

OK, I'm gonna just ask a question.

HOW did you buy a house and not know there was a sprinkler system?

1) They usually are advertised as a major upgrade because they are VERY expensive to install, and

2) your inspector should have at least pointed it out.

Did you have the house inspected before you bought it?

Well, since I've never owned a house with one before, I didn't know what to look for. Yes, we did have the home inspected. No, he did not point it out.

That's how. That's why I ask questions - to learn!

If the system is shut down and back flow removed with the main line capped, I have no idea why you would have to pull all the pipe from the yard.

I would ask them if you removed the backflow and capped if you would be subjected to the fee. But why not put water in the system and use it?

I would ask why not break the feeder line(s) to the system, terminate it with a connector and hook a hose up to it for the 2~3 months you water the grass. Put a Y on the spigot supplying the system to keep access to the spigot.
