Hello, my husband and I currently live in Boston and are considering a move to Nashville. He is from NY and is concerned about living in the Nashville area, specifically that it won't be "progressive enough" for him. Can you recommend places to take him to show that Nashville is a great area to live with much more to see and hear than country music? Thank you!

Start out with an evening at the Schermerhorn and a morning walk at Radnor Lake. Both will touch his senses.
Nashville won't compare to Boston or New York as far as a wide and deep range of cultural possibilities. However, in the end, one is only limited in these areas by their creativity, energy, and desire.
Enjoy!!

For dining there is a wonderful tapas bar, Cha Chah located at 2013 Belmont Blvd. Try the spicy gambas (shrimp) it's wonderful.

Forgive me but I just have to say it: the yogurt shop. Sorry!!!

Ok, seriously, in addition to the great ideas here I bet Alleycat might have some info on places as well.

If hubby is from NY, currently lives in Boston and already has the preconceived notion that Nashville isn't a right fit, it probably won't be.

Why are you considering a move to Nashville anyway?

Highly recommend Sambuca in the Gulch for dinner and ambience (live jazz music most nights). Maybe even tour the ICON condo, across the street, just for fun. They are impressive; with a modern feel that can be surprising to find here in Nashville for visitors.

Could add a lunch in Cool Springs or Green Hills to make sure he knows that we have what everyone else has too (grin). Cheescake Factory seems to calm out-of-towner’s looking to make sure we have indoor plumbing… (laughing)

The Frist comes to mind. There are some cool restaraunts and bars in East Nashville that generally cater to the more progressive/liberal type of person.

I just moved here from NYC area, and I would NOT take him to most of the places mentioned above. They are all fine places to go, but will only pale in comparison. High culture and fine dining are not Nashville's strengths in comparison.

Take him to what is available here and not there. Great neighborhoods of genuine and friendly people. Easy access to the outdoors (Radnor, as mentioned above, Either warner park, etc), and yes, music (Bluebird or station inn for first timers).

If those don't appeal and only high culture will do, I hate to say it, but you should reconsider moving here.

The Schermerhorn, TPAC and the Frist are great, as is the Nashville Children's Theater. Nashville is not NYC, though, so don't set yourself up for disappointment.

As for culture, country music is part of Southern culture. The Country Music Hall of Fame's motto is Honor Thy Music. As a country songwriter I felt compelled to add that We moved here from Northern CA and have embraced what makes this region special. Hopefully you will love it too.
