Talking Franklin

Hello,
My friend and I are moving to Tennessee in late summer. We are both sick of the east coast and everything about it. We are thinking about Nashville but someone told me Franklin is nice and not too far if we get jobs in downtown Nashville. Can anyone tell me what it's like there in Franklin and should we choose it over living in Nashville. We have a lot of research to do in a very short time and any help would be appreciated!

There's a couple of people here on the forum who live in Franklin. I'll just add that Franklin is a nice place to live. It's grown a lot in the last few years but it's kept a lot of its small town charm.

Whether you should pick it over Nashville depends on a lot of factors. You might want to mention the things that are most important to you. I live in Nashville and don't have kids; if I had children, I would think seriously about moving to Franklin.

You can PM me and I'll answer all I can. We've lived in Franklin for 5 years now. I work in Nashville.

My friend and I are both single, no kids. We want to be near Nashville but not necessarily live there. I did some research on Franklin and it looks like a great place to live. You mentioned small town charm which is what we want, that small town feel. We're also thinking traffic wise, how bad is it if we work in downtown Nashville? The traffic where we come from is horrendous. Obviously there will be some but just curious.

Commuting time would depend on the time you're going and where in downtown you're going. Traffic on I-65 is heavy during rush hour. You could get from Franklin to downtown Nashville in about 30 to 45 minutes; this is allowing time to get in or out of downtown. I used to work downtown; sometime, because of the one-way streets, you have to "loop" around before you can get going in the direction you want to go. akm4 might have a better estimate. I live in Bellevue in Nashville, so I don't travel that route on a daily basis.

One question. Why are you thinking you'll be working downtown. There are a number of office parks around the city; a number of them are in Williamson County (Franklin, Brentwood, Cool springs).

My drive time into Nashville is less than many due to my proximity to I-65. There are parts of Franklin that can take 15-20 minutes just to get to the freeway!

Not sure that I will necessarily be working there. Going to send out resume and see what happens. My friend does think she does want to work downtown though. It's a liitle overwhelming but exciting and no matter where we work can't wait to get there. Thank you for your help.

I think you would really like Franklin. It has a nice downtown area, with a striving artist community, a few good restaurants, upscale shopping in nearby Brentwood/Cool Springs, etc.

By the way, the folk at Historic Nashville used to give a downtown walking tour. I'm not sure if they still do, but you might find that helpful if they do.

They still do- Franklin has great walking tours too. We especially like the Ghosts and Gore version by lantern with a costumed docent guide!
