Do you not think that medicating the mentally ill (with inheritable conditions), so that they "appear" normal, then putting them out on the streets to have "normal" relationships and create children, isn't contributing to the deterioration of mankind?

It wouldn't be so bad except those people actively seek others like them (the best they can find albeit) to mate with.

Geeze. Look up "eugenics". The whole theory was discredited fifty years ago. Yes, there are particular genetic diseases that can run in families, but the general intelligence level of an individual has little or no direct relation to that of the parents. What CAN happen is a mother doing drugs and alcohol damaging a fetus, and a home environment that places no importance on education, and a support network of fruitcakes feeding a child misinformation.

Eugenics was forced. I'm not interested in that.

It may not be passed down through genetics but it surely is passed down through horrible environments.

Some of us DO know what happened with the eugenics programs in this country...programs which fueled Hitler's drive to eliminate people he considered to be "inferior". However, the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction...way too far!

If this is the best that can be done after millions or billions of years, what do you make of that and how did the first humans ever manage to survive???
Saying we have evolved over billions or even millions of years is misleading. The first species that even could remotely be called human-like is far less than one million years old, and most likely closer to a mere 400,00. And when you compare that timespan to the 4.6 Billion year age of Earth, than you realize that we've been around for only a blink of the cosmic eye. (I recall an old college Anthro proffesoor saying that if the age of the Earth were considerd to be one day--beginning at midnight--that we arrived on the scene only at around 30 second to the following midnight!)
Stupidity? Sure. Greed and arrogance and shortsightedness cause problems in the world, but it's the very same aggressive nature that got us here. Look at the marvels of some of our technology, like in medicine and science and electronics, and it might give you a bit more respect for how far we've come.
Also, make sure you realzize that our caveman ancestors in all likelihood indulged in cruelty and violence as well; they just didn't posess the technology to do it on as widespread a basis as we do today.

Don't forget that modern medicine has also played a part in reducing the number of "natural selection" cases. Sometimes man interferes where they shouldn't. Again, just look at the people who likely wouldn't have reproduced many years ago, simply because they would have been institutionalized or not survived, due to their erratic, irrational behavior. I'm not saying that modern medicine is bad....but there ARE two sides to that coin.

So what are you suggesting? Did you have a proposal you wanted to put on the table?

No, and that's the real problem, isn't it? ...knowing what's wrong, but the solutions are inhumane, aren't they? Oh, I have a solution...but I won't say it out loud (or type it), because it sounds barbaric.

Look, we live in a world where people actually think that parents should lose custody of their children if they abuse them by letting them get obese (child abuse/neglect) etc., but they don't seem to have a problem medicating (to mask the symptoms) the mentally ill and allowing them to reproduce.
