It is spring and our patio always hosts a nesting pair of mourning doves. Last week our first set of babies left (I thought) and now a new bratch has been started. I noticed the mourning doves seemed to be calling more than usual, especially during the day. Today, I noticed that one of the young ones is still on the patio. It doesn't appear to be injured and can get about a foot off the ground when it tries to fly but that is it. I put out what I had, oats, millet, and pieces of bread and some water but I am concerned it wouldn't get enough to eat on the patio. I don't think the parents would still be feeding it but I don't know for sure.
We have had issues in the past with oppossum, or something else, getting to the nest and destroying the eggs so I'm concerned the young one can't defend itself at night. We keep out the nasty critters by placing rose branches around the bottom of the post where the birds nest but the young one moves around enough that I can't catch him/her.
Any thoughts to keep it safe until it decides to leave?
Yesterday a crow got the new eggs so the parents and my favorite young aren't around now.
