They were incredible the last time around Ann Arbor. I hope that this brood is just as good. Since you're in Michigan, if you don't get many up your way, you might want to take a trip down to the Cherry Hill Nature Preserve in Superior Township. That seemed to be one of the best places around.

I read that article. There was also a chart I found that lists other years and other broods of these things. Do you think the chart was saying that these things appear yearly in different locations?

Yes, there are several species of periodical cicadas, both the 13-year and 17-year kind. There are also different broods so there can be emergences in different regions nearly every year. The "Brood X", as this one is known, is one of the larger ones in terms of both abundance and regional distribution. I'm not sure what chart you saw, but the link below shows a map produced by the U.S. Forest Service. I can't vouch for its accuracy, since the 2004 emergence of 17-year cicadas in Michigan occurred in a much larger area than shown on the map. It also can't be determined from the map where brood ranges may overlap. Still, it does give a general idea that different broods do occur in different regions of the eastern U.S.

Please note that most people are more familiar with the annual cicadas which can be heard every summer. Their larval stage is usually just two years underground, with some emerging each year as adults. With the periodic cicadas, they all emerge simultaneously in the given year for that region. They do not emerge in a staggered fashion as do the annual cicadas.

I'm ready. The last time that I was supposed to be swarmed I had to look for them.

Nope. I remember driving up to Baltimore to see my Mom. Every time I'd pass a group of buildings the sound would stop, and then when I'd get to an open area it would just be a swell of shrilling again. Her little back yard was overwhelmed with them, and I would watch the cicadas crawling up the tree trunks. The only thing I really dislike about them is that when they fly they tend to fly right into a person's face or hair. I know they're harmless, but yuck!

same here, in 2013. they can be surprisingly patchy.
this year they're already making their chimneys all over my yard, just waiting for that magic 64 degrees F to hit the soil.

We were living in NY during the last emergence. We drove north on the Thruway to see friends in Rhinebeck. This weird sound was getting louder and louder the further north we went. It so loud, kind of unworldly, like a sci-fI movie soundtrack. It was the cicada. We had them in our yard and found their moulted exoskeletons everywhere that year.
