Hello,

We want to stay overnight on our way to Denver. Anywhere between Kearney and North Platte. (We want a less than 6 hour trip into Denver the following morning.) Could anyone recommend a safe, pet friendly hotel in between or in these cities?

Thats the best I got. Have a fun road trip, and just warning you now, I-80 is a loooongg drive.

Holiday Inn in Kearney is awesome. Kearney Hotels - Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts Kearney Hotel in Kearney | Best Price Guarantee or First Night Free Has an indoor waterpark for the kids! Lot of great restaurants nearby. I-80 and then I-76 is a very long drive (its about a 550 mile drive on these routes to Denver from Omaha), the small consolation prize being that the speed limit is 75 mph almost the entire way and that you don't really go through any urban areas allowing you to make a little bit quicker time than you would on the East Coast. If you have a chance stop at Ole's in Paxton (about 30 miles west of North Platte) which serves all three meals a day, has amazing steaks and prime rib, and which has a Western lodge style decor featuring tons of stuffed wild animals - a polar bear, moose heads, mountain lions. Have fun!

I will second that a stop at Ollies is great fun. Eating next to a billion pieces of taxidermy is AWESOME!

If this is your first trip to Denver I suggest going a little further, At least Ogallala.
Not because of hotels but for the the drive into Denver.

I have went there many times now but always try to stay just inside the Colorado border.
Then the next morning head towards denver with the sun rising behind you and the mountains rising in front of you.

The biggest factor to me would be how long OP has to travel to reach a hotel. The furthest I generally go in a day is 12 hours/700 miles. I don't stop for a lot of breaks and I think generally after 12 hours you start to get a little too tired. Since I live about 6 hours from Denver I don't think I'd ever have the need to stay in Ogallala and then make the drive to Denver (I stay in Ogallala plenty of other times to go to Lake Mac) but if you do Ogallala is a neat town and JustMeT3K that drive sounds really spectacular! Ogallala to Denver is about 200 miles/3 hours - so a very easy drive the next day!

If you google 12754 Co Rd 370, Sterling, CO
It is right by a museum and there is a (not very fancy) RV parking with electric hookups and I never could find a price or any signs saying "pay here*.
The second place I found looking for the first place.
Riverside city Park on the Northeast side of I-76 and Hwy 52. Very low cost tent or RV camping.

The trip for me was usually about 5-7 hours to one of the spots above.
Then the morning drive in which always made everything else in life small.
I would have lunch at Wheatridge by Larson's ski and sail shop.
Then explore the mountain roads for a day or two.
Then drive home, which was kinda boring after the way in and time in the mountains.

I used to make that weekend trip every May. Sad to say I didn't get to go this year.

If you have kids, I also recommend the Holiday Inn in Kearney. I stayed there a few times as a kid when we would travel there to visit relatives and loved the indoor waterpark.

Kens Motel in downtown Aurora(two miles off I-80), meticulously clean and they accept pets. Rooms are only $45 a night, and there is grass right outside for the pup to do his/her business. It's quiet too! It's a six hour drive from Aurora to Denver. Being a small farm town of about 4500 people, it's very safe, you could take your pooch for a walk with no worries.
