hi! I'm quite possibly moving to Kearney this spring and would like to know how the employment situation is? I am moving from a very small town in Michigan where finding a job is next to impossible without driving to a neighboring town at least 30 miles away.

My husband and I will be looking for a house or apartment to rent. Are there parts of Kearney we should stay away from?

Thanks!!

You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding employment or housing in Kearney. The newspaper is probably your best bet for rentals and also a good source for jobs.

You can also check out workforce development for jobs, Kearney's zip is 68845 or 68847

Really isn't any bad parts of Kearney, there is some apartments to stay away from in the southeast part, I believe they are on D st. they are constantly having problems. You also might be careful about rentals around the college if you are worried about noisy neighbors and such. Kearney is a a great little city, hope you enjoy it. Anymore questions just ask.

Kearney is a neat smaller city and I recall the northern part of the city being a nice area with shopping and well-kept areas. From passing through Kearney, it has a nice mix of established and newer areas. I seriously considered about going to college there before chosing a closer school in South Dakota.

Thanks for your input. If this happens, and it looks like it will, we'll be moving in sometime in April. I'm really excited!

Is Kearney a concern for a lot of bad weather, particularly tornadoes?

Kearney does get some bad weather. It had a bad tornado outbreak last spring and had some damage around the city. The tri-cities area seems to be a mini hot spot for storms. That being said, I have lived in the area many years and I personally have never seen a tornado or been even close to being impacted by a tornado. I wouldn't let it keep someone moving to Kearney, its a terrific place to live.

This cool map is based on some dated data, but it shows tornado density in Nebraska:

Nebraska Tornado Density (http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/nebraska-tornado-density-map.html - broken link)

Buffalo County (Kearney) is just to the west (up and left on the angled map) of the giant one (Hall).
