Do your homework, Rocky: Pahrump Valley Times, Valley Electric, Pahrump Arts Council, Town of Pahrump, Nye County - all have informative websites. Good luck. The sun shines almost every day, 55 degree avg Dec/Jan, nice dry desert climate, hoping for beautiful wildflowers this spring after recent rains and snow.

We thought about Pahrump before we bought in Vegas. Not for us. Recommend you stay there for at least a week or two prior to making a major commitment. If you still like it then you are good to go. We planned on spending a week and left town after a couple days. This was back in 2007, so maybe things have changed a lot since then. Seemed like a lack of zoning, mobile homes abound, a lack of choice on medical facilities as well as a general lack of entertainment options. If this small town option appeals to you, you may want to consider Mesquite as well. Good luck.

Default There's more to Pahrump... all bad.

Pahrump made national news... worst run town in USA!
Overpaid officials.
Lots of crime.
Where else can an official get arrested for numerous crimes including misuse of county funds and a few DUI's with wrecked county vehicles... and get off on all counts!?

Hey, "Glad I Don't Live There", I'm glad you don't live here, too. Gee, where can corrupt politicians get away with committing crimes and getting a slap on the wrist? How about, oh, EVERYWHERE.

As a fairly new resident of Pahrump (after having lived in Vegas for 10 years), I'd say that Pahrump is what you make of it. Yeah, our officials are nothing to brag about, but whose are? Our crime rate may be lousy, but I don't feel like I live in a dangerous community. In fact, I live in a really nice quiet neighborhood (off of Red Rock & 372) with good neighbors, peaceful streets (have heard sirens once since moving here in August), a fabulous view of mountains in every direction (almost all homes are on at least an acre and they're mostly single stories, so few views are blocked), and clear star-filled skies.

Yeah, it takes some getting used to, not having all the amenities of a big city, but it's an easy drive to the nearest Vegas neighborhood (Ft. Apache & Tropicana) to get a fill of all your usual shopping conveniences, plus it's not too bad a drive to the Strip either if you want a night out. There is very little traffic between Pahrump and the outer edge of Vegas, so it's a 75 mph drive through desert and pretty mountains for most of the drive. If you want casinos and free booze, we have plenty of that here. Hookers? Not too far away. Guns galore. Mostly not what I'm looking for, but there's a great pet store (The Animal House), three grocery stores, Wal-Mart for your general basics, Home Depot, and most of the fast food places you're used to, if that's what you want.

While I'm not the average resident of Pahrump (I'm gay and Jewish), it's pretty much one of those live your own life and no one cares kind of places. Everyone has been really nice to me and my partner (we go everywhere together and I assume people assume), and it's a great place if you have pets because everyone does and there's plenty of room for them. The bad thing is that there are only three vets and none of them are open on Sundays and everyone disagrees who the best vet is. So far, we've been to two of the three and have no complaints about the standard of care. We'll be trying out the third soon.

The cost of water is...the cost of electricity, as we're on wells here. Electricity is hard for me compare to other places as our house has a heat pump, which runs both heat & air-conditioning, so I'm not yet sure if that's more efficient or not. Our bills are cheaper than they were in Vegas, so that's something, I guess.

Housing right now is pretty darned cheap. We bought a 3 bdrm, 2 bath house on a little more than an acre for 89k. If I was going to rent here, I would look into renting a house rather than an apartment. Most of the apartment complexes I've seen here aren't places I'd want to live. There may be nicer complexes, but I haven't come across them.

It's very very easy to find your way around town. If it's not on Hwy 160, it's on Hwy 372. If it's not on either highway, it's not too far from one of them. Like people have suggested, come here for a week (there are awesome RV parks here - the nicest ones I've ever seen) and poke around. It shouldn't take too long to know if you'll like it or not.

I think us pahrump residents dodged a bullet when "Glad I dont live here" Decided not to move here. Sounds like the type that wants to move in and turn Pahrump into California.. lol We have had those types in the past and they never last long or do well out here.

Glad I saw this thread. "Glad" kinda put me off on the other thread, then when I saw him here I saw that maybe he had an axe to grind.

Lol. Baton Rouge (where I live) used to be the capitol of overpaid corrupt politicians, now it's Washington DC. *rimshot*

I'm reading these forums now because I'm looking to move to Nevada.
