Here are some photos of Rhyolite, a ghost town just west of Beatty. This is a barren spot with no trees, so lumber had to be hauled in. Most homes and other buildings were built from the earth, and once the town was abandoned they didn't last long. Rhyolite had a short, fast life... You can get more info about it at Rhyolite, Nevada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It's worth a visit when the weather is cool, and an added bonus is the truly great candy/chocolate store next to the gas station in Beatty-- assuming it's still open, that is definitely worth the trip!

Default More pics of Rhyolite Ghost Town

Here are pics of the semi-famous Cook Bank on Golden Street (seriously), which was built to last-- but alas it has outlasted the town. You may have seen it in various movies.

From a distance you can see how barren the landscape is. This town is on the edge of Death Valley...

Here's the town jail. It was also built to last...

The train station (mostly intact)

Don't know what these buildings are

Default Blue Diamond and Fish Feeding

Before they moved the Lake Mead Marina because of the low lake level, feeding popcorn to the fish there was a popular pastime, especially for kids. This is what it looked like.

And this is one of my favorite pictures of Nevada. No description is necessary.
