Not really though.

I've been driving a taxi for four years now... that's two years before Uber/Lyft and now two years after... I don't really see much of a difference at all as far as income goes. I still get my 25 ride shifts and I still book over $300. If anything, I think my average tip is actually increasing over time.
Summertime is especially nice for us in the cab... it's always kinda funny to see people outside when it's 116 degrees out looking down at their phones impatiently or hearing them call the driver only to find out they can't find each other because there is inexperience when it comes to properly picking up and dropping off.

Earlier, you spoke about the cab lines in a negative manner for the drivers... and sure, there is usually at least a few cabs anywhere you go... sometimes a lot... but for people trying to get to where they need to be RIGHT NOW, that is viewed by many of my passengers as a positive thing. They know that as soon as they exit just about any building in this city, we will be ready and waiting to take them immediately... and although it may be a bit more expensive in some cases (when not taking into account Uber's surge pricing), people are most certainly still using us.

You book 300 a day and get 30% take home so you make 100 a day + tips so let's call it 150 a day. That's pretty low. But correct me if I am wrong (that's about what I was doing when I drove)


I do 100-150 take home in 4-5 hours on a weekday. I do 250-300 take home Fri-Sun in 8-10 hours. On weekdays there's only a short period of time that's lucrative hence the short driving spells.

I do see the instant cab availability as a positive, but I also see doormen making people wait to extort money out of them. 16 cabs in line, and the doorman has a line of people waiting and he's not even waving cabs forward. See it every day.

Lyft/Uber can easily negate the wait times if they work on their gps. I have had people INSIDE my car request a ride and end up with a different driver 5-10 minutes away. It makes no sense at all. It's not just me, it's a pretty common complaint on rideshare pages.
I took a Family to a restaurant. They got out, I ended the ride, and the place was closed so they came over and asked if I could take them back. I said sure and they requested a ride. It went to a guy down the road. They cancelled and tried again 3 times to get me. They gave up and just waited for the other guy.
My point is, there are almost always drivers staged at pick up points. If they fixed their gps issues, people would rarely ever have to wait at a pick up spot.

Another thing hurting us is the hotels putting us in the middle of nowhere. I've been at the pick up, gotten a request, and still had to wait for the passengers to get to me because they're 1/2 mile away. MGM has theirs waaaay in the back parking garage. Same with the Venetian. Caesars is out by the road. The Flamingo is over by the Cromwell.

Honestly, that is probably the only reason cabs are still going. I've had a bunch of people call trying to find the pick up, get frustrated, and say they'll just take a cab because it's right there.

And you say the cabs aren't dying off, but apparently, there's 10,000 less cab drivers in town and that number is growing.
Lyft and Uber are rapidly growing. It's inevitable, cabs are 8 track cassettes in an age of streamable music.

Frankly my experiences with cabs have been so negative, I'll walk or wait. I walked at 10 pm at night in Palm Springs across the whole airport, across a 4 lane road to have Lyft pick me up at city hall/library. I don't know the laws but this seems like unfair business practice to me. So charge me a fee to pick up at the airport like Las Vegas.

One we were going to dinner at Paris and I was in the valet lane, toward the street. This cab driver is yelling at me to move over. There was no where to go! My husband said you just drive and I'll do the yelling. lol

Really, where are some of these cabbies from that think this is proper business behavior?

I just got my cc bil that had all my lyft trips on it, about $240.00 for 4 days. (Yes I tip.) Not once did I have an issue with any driver. All cars were clean, the drivers were all were interesting conversationalists. Air on, windows up. They didn't smell. Not one was ever on a phone, texting or anything.
Very pleasant experience. I even quit taking a limo to the airport. Sometimes those clowns leave a lot to be desired too.

Yet Nokia brings back the 3310 brick / basic (dumb) phone and it sells out in the UK immediately, and elsewhere. And Netflix is staying afloat due to 50 percent of it's profits from it's mail in / out DVD red envelope service. So obsolete can be a proven profit maker.

Nostalgia accounts for the first one. I promise you no one will be nostalgic for a cab ride.

Lack of high speed internet accounts for the second one. In 2017 2.1 million people are still using dial up internet.

I stopped by the largest drug house (dispensary) Saturday night to watch history being made, and saw at least ten Lyft and Uber drivers. Only thing was they had no customers. Yes, there were there to buy product for themselves. Enjoy that next ride with your dope addicted rideshare driver.

When did lyft drivers start wearing name tags?

I spent some time at dispensaries....without a customer....because my customer was inside buying weed.... I also picked up a few people from the dispensaries....so I was sitting empty waiting for them to come out.
