Hi all, as I'm planning my move to Vegas from overseas in about a month or so, I'm trying to get prepared for everything now. My previous CA driver license expired a few years already (been living abroad) and as soon as I move to Vegas, I want to take care of that first since I'm looking to buy a car immediately. I went to the DMV website and did some reading.

I know I have to get an address proof first. I will rent an apartment for short term for about 3 months. I also read that I have to retake the written and driving test again since it's been expired for a few years. But DMV website only mentioned expired NV license. I assume it will apply to my case too, right?

Also, if I remember correctly, I just go line up early at DMV and do the written test and such. Then I will get an appointment date for driving test. Is it still true? Haven't been to DMV for so many years.

And how long can I get the driver license because I want to buy a car asap? I can drive the rental car with my international license for the time being. But the longer I drive the rental car, the more money I have to pay. I rather use that for buying a car.

Thanks for any comments.

You better study on line with nv. DMV practice tests, the written test is much harder than Ca. I'm not sure if you can tak written and driving test on same day, and with the lines plan on wasting two days. Lookup those practice now and start practice ing! Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I saw NV DMV has the study materials for sale online.

And do you guys know if I can use the rental car for driving test?

Why can't you just trade the international DL for a NV DL?

I didn't know I can trade my international DL for a NV DL. If so, that's even better.

By the way, just checked again on DMV website. Rental car is not accepted for driving test.

There are free tests online, why buy?

I just thought it's some reading materials that I can use to study for the test before I get there. If the free test is sufficient, then money saved. :-)

I've only taken the test twice since 1964, but I remember both times how easy it was. And I missed one on each test, they pointed out where the answer was, and then asked that same question again. I didn't say you should turn your head and look before changing lanes. (Still don't believe that's the right way all the time since you could hit somebody in front of you if they stop suddenly.) So it's not so much of a test as a way to make you aware of a few Nevada laws. For instance, it's very important to know these three things, not necessarily in this order: 1, you can make U-Turns here as long as there is not a sign telling you not to; 2, pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way, and you are supposed to come to a complete stop to allow them to cross and get across before you start up again; 3, It is OK to make right runs on red AFTER YOU STOP. Also, I notice they don't do this elsewhere. you are to pull to the right and stop to allow emergency vehicles to pass. (Then don't try to cut off the guy in front of you when he pulls back into traffic). And watch for school zones. When the light is flashing and says 15mph, they don't mean 20 - nor does it mean 10 is better.

thanks for the tips. I took written tests in Canada and California before. Passed without any problems. I will just do some online tests and then go to DMV Henderson when I get there.

But first, I need to have two doc proof of residency. Rental agreement plus bank statement. As soon as I sign the short term lease agreement, I can go to bank to open a bank account and wait for a statement which will take a while I guess. So probably, I will need to rent a car for a month with my international driver license while waiting for all these processes to go through. Hard for me to buy a car in Vegas and put on a reasonably-priced insurance with an international driver license.

This is just part of the moving process...
