The unemployment office could probably make an FAQ or something to make it clear whether someone has enough to file or not. This person's already wasted three weeks just trying to get an answer =/

Yes, surprisingly there is nothing that restricts where you are looking for work and they are actually encouraging people to look for jobs in other states

You are filing for the unemployment insurance paid for by all employers during a certain Base Period. Usually, but not in all states, it is the first four of the last five completed quarters. (you know, a quarter is every three months beginning with January ending with December.) UI is actually a Federal program administered by each state under that state's laws.

If your earnings for the base period are in another state you would file (with or from the state you're in) against the state where you earned the money. If you don't have enough for full benefits from the other state, and IF you earned any money during the BASE period where you now live, you are entitled to combine the wages from both states if it means better benefits for you. A Combined Wage Claim is then paid by the state where you live now. You could work in 50 different states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and do a combined wage claim. Don't laugh. It happens.

You still have to be able and available to find work anywhere you can.

I would add to the above that while we used to make you show up at the UI office and file all kinds of paperwork for all the other states, I believe that now you can just call the UI number in the other state and file directly with them, no matter where you live now. It seems to me that there is a danger of not getting certain benefits if you didn't know about them, and they don't ask you.

UPDATE: I called California unemployment office which also restricted their hours. Mon to Fri (8am-12pm). Nevada hours to "process" a claim is Mon & Tues (8am-5pm). There are far less people in Nevada than California, yet Nevada has less hours of phone operations. Maybe no state income tax is not a good thing. (Ha Ha) Anyway, I called California and had a wait time of only 5 minutes. I'm filing my claim through California. Got everything taking care of in 35 minutes instead of wasting almost 4 weeks just to reach a live person in Nevada. Thanks for the replies.

Hope it's all smooth sailing from here on out.
They'll send you a Bank of America debit card and you get to certify online or by phone and when you something seems off, check on this site: EDDsucks.com — Share your EDD stories and troubles here. You are not alone!

Yes, it's really called EDD sucks
but there are some helpful info and you can panic with other people if your money doesn't go through

Apparently they are encouraging people to do their claim filing on-line now. Personally I felt that only being able to file by phone sucked, but this sucks even more. I have always wondered about the intelligence of UI management ever since a certain governor demoted the guy who knew the most and replaced him with a political appointee who knew absolutely nothing. http://detr.state.nv.us/PDFS/Telepho...enterHours.pdf

California debt = $3100/soul, Nevada debt = $1480/soul. Clearly, CA is more proficient at giving away its money!
