Jobs at the moment are plentiful with the mine going full tilt. Rental housing is kinda hard to find at the moment. There are luckily quite a few homes for sale, but the market seems overvalued right now.

Very Small Town...was under a depression when the mine closed. However I believe Kennecot is open again. Some of my family members live there. They all work at the prison. Cute town, people are friendly... Very small.

Is there anything to do at night in Ely? Like a movie theater, bowling, or even a bar to play pool? I'm also a single guy, is it even possible to meet any women? I've never lived in a small town and may be looking to move to Ely.

There is a small movie theater. Well, its much better than it was, but its not much. It shows one movie per week, showings are each night a 7pm. Usually changes weekly, but some of the bigger movies play for 2 weeks. On the plus side, its cheap compared to a big city theater. Friday nights is about the worst time to go. It seems everyone in town with kids 9-15 drop them off at the theater Friday night and let them go wild. It doesnt matter what the movie is, Friday night it will be full of kids. There is a bowling alley, not really sure how big it is, but I know the league results are in the paper on a regular basis. I know there is at least 2 bars with pool tables, the VFW and Shooters. I dont really know about any others, I dont drink and havent been to any of the bars in town. I cant speak as to the female situation as Im married, but I know I work with a few single women.

Thanks uli2000! That's very informative information. The city's website dosen't really say too much. I don't think it matters what town/city your in, Friday night at the theater is always an unsupervised babysitter for the kids. Oh, I forgot to ask if there is a coffee shop?

Their is at least one 'full service' coffee shop. Its in the Flower Basket on 11th near the railroad depot. The hotel Nevada also has a 'Starbucks', but its only like 2 espresso machines in the resturant. I guess they buy their coffee from Starbucks, but it's certainly no Starbucks.

I lived in Ely a while ago and most of my Family still lives there. There are jobs there regardless of what you hear. The mines have opened back up as of a few years ago and are doing well (3 family members of mine work there.. get it mine?ha, ha. j/k) There are a lot of Gas Stations and a few Casinos getting jobs are probably easy if you are willing to work in the customer service/ housekeeping kind of jobs. If you like the small towns this is one for you. Everyone there is nice and even though there is the small town drama If you like the country and beautiful scenery you will love it. The prison is out a ways from Ely you can drive there it is probably about 25-35 mins from Ely past "Cross Timbers" I knew a few people who worked there as well. Not my kind of work. All in all I think that if you want to get away from the city and live in a nice quiet town this is the place.

I'm moving to Ely this summer and am wondering about it also. I only spent one night in the town (Hotel Nevada) and don't have a feel for it yet. I've looked at the Ely Times online and www.elynevada.net - both were helpful, I'm now looking for some personal insight.

What is the housing situation like? Are there apartment complexes or should I be looking for a rental house?

What is the growing season like? Will I be able to have a small vegetable garden or is it too short?

What is the winter like? Seems like it's pretty short, how early in the season can you golf and do other outdoor activities?

What are the demographics of the town like, are there many young people? It seems like a pretty conservative town, am I going to feel out of place being somewhat liberally minded and not an active church-goer?

I owned a house in Ely, worked at the prison too for a short time. If you are a hunter and drink alcohol you will fit in fine. Otherwise, you might have trouble fitting in. It is a very small town with a lot of small-minded people, but I met some really nice, kind open-minded people too. There isn't much to do so be prepared for a lot of down time in your life. It is like 3-4 hours from any major city too. Scenery is awesome.

Housing right now isn't that bad. Quite a few rentals and lots of homes for sale. There are a couple of apartment complexes, but they are low income housing and attract, well to put it bluntly, trash.

Winter is usually long and cold. This year is very strange. Usually, January is our coldest month, with highs in the teens and lows in the negatives. This year, it has been really warm, like 45 today for the high. It was like this the year I moved here (2005), and then come the end of Febuary and into march, we got about 48 inches of snow and it ended up causing some flooding when the weather heated up. Im not a winter person, but lots of people snowshoe or xcountry ski, and there is plans for a downhill ski resort in the works. There is a golf course, though I only played in once, I just dont enjoy golf much anymore. My boss is a big golfer and he's out there from about April with colored balls since there is still snow, up untill about mid November.

There is a pretty short growing season. Last year, I lost all my heirloom tomatoes due to freeze the first 3 weeks of May (we had last snow for the season on May 16th).

As far as the town, lots of older folks, a few younger folks, and a quite a few familes. As far as being liberal, keep that to yourself for the most part. Should be no worries about not being a church going type, though.
