SB.. I would look to get a 4 wheel or All-Wheel Drive, My guess as a pastry chef you would be going to work at O'Dark 30. (3-4am) ?? Most of the snow start in the overnight hours, and the plow do get to the main road 1st when there is a few inches of snow on them, then move on to seconday then local roads. So you need to be able to get to the main roads. That might mean that you will be pushing thru 3+" of snow. Think about your route to work, hills that you need to go up, Distance to main roads. If there is a 'bad' one due in, will your hotel that you are work at put you up the night before it? So you will be there the next morning. ( I know alot of big hotel set aside rooms for there staff, when big storms are due, so they will have some staff).

I live in Amherst. It is a wonderful place to raise a family, if you prefer to do so in a rural type of place - a very kid-friendly town with excellent elementary schools, a great library with lots of activities/programs/events, and a variety of recreational activities for kids. It has a beautiful, historic town center. It's mostly very rural, but its stretch on 101A is all stores and chain restaurants; there you'll find a Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Petco, Lowes, Dollar Tree, a couple of Dunkin' Donuts, etc., etc., etc. The nearest Hannaford is in Bedford; there are also Shaw's and Stop & Shop in Milford, which may be closer depending upon where in Amherst one lives. I don't think we have Sweetbays up here...never heard of that.

Souhegan, the public high school, has an interesting and somewhat unique philosophy/premise to it, so you may want to look into that if you have kids that are high school age, or think you'd want to live here while they are in high school. The Souhegan philosophy works really well for some kids, and some families love it, but there are some who are not super thrilled with that philosophy.

With regard to your "keeping up with the Joneses" comment - there are some people here who seem to be into that, but it seems (to me, anyway) that most people aren't. I've heard that it used to be more that way back in the 80s, but don't feel that's a huge issue here now. I'm not into that and don't feel any pressure to be that way in my neighborhood or the people I spend time with here. I think if people are into that they find their circle/outlet for that type of stuff, and if not, they don't.

Hope this was helpful. :-)
