How will this change your grocery shopping habits? I live in CT. All of the Shaw's Supermarkets left the state a few years ago. Also, the A&P Super Foodmart chain went belly-up as well.
Stop & Shop is a third rate store as is Shaw's which own them. It was not always this way, but Shaw's has terrible prices & the chain has been mismanaged into the ground. The Shaw's in Tilton is closing next month BTW.
Super Walmarts are opening in Gilford & Tilton that will fill any void in the Lakes Region left by Shaw's closing. Looks like a new Market Basket is going up in Plymouth also. I have not been in Shaw's in several years. Their prices are absurd.
What is it with supermarket economics these days? A few weeks ago I saw cryptic signs "Save Market Basket, Stay Artie Strong" scattered around town. When I asked the store manager I was told about an attempted forced removal of the CEO. Arthur T. Demoulas remains at helm of Market Basket (VIDEO) - Lowell Sun Online
Shaws we could lose for all I care. The prices are pie in the sky, although they did at least get rid of those stupid rewards cards. Maybe Hannafords can buy them out.

the Market Basket brouhaha is 'in fighting' amongst the family. Both cousins want to be in charge of the 20 BILLION $ annual income. Both sides have been in court so many times the NH Supreme Court refuses to hear them anymore. I wish the stores were a little cleaner.
I still use my rewards card at the Shaw's in Ellsworth, Maine. The other store nearby was a Stop&Shop. Hannafords is just as expensive as Shaws.
That was why I was thinking Hannafords might take over the Shaws. Market Basket is good about having low prices. Shaws seems to have prices that are about twice Market basket but they have specials that offer 30 % off so it's STILL more expensive than MB.

I didn't realize the Shaws in Tilton was closing. We usually to the smaller one at the Belmont Mall for the forgotten or replacement items. If we're going all the way up to Tilton, might as well go to Market Basket and save $$. I"m sorry to see them close though, because they ARE competition for Market Basket. And don't get me wrong, I do prefer MB to the other stores, except for the lousy produce department, but I hate to see a monopoly with a grocery store--what will be their incentive to keep the prices low? None, once the competition is gone. Sure wish a Wegmans would come to New Hampshire (much more competitive for 'regular' shoppers than either a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's...

Hannaford's is pricier than MB yes BUT the produce and meat and selection is top-notch. the stores are usually quite clean. I never liked Shaws, and S&S were all little "corner" stores on the seacoast, so no biggie I believe.
