Can anyone recommend a moving company for a 15 mile move northern MA to southern NH. Anyone I know who has moved wouldn't use theirs again. Having moved 3 times in the last 6 years it's always been on my husband's employer. This time it's all us and it's a little overwhelming.

We worked with McLaughlin out of Nashua, a Mayflower rep, for our move to Washington State last September. We had no issues at all. Good group of people.

This would be an interstate move so the rates are competitive. I would avoid any mover that is not registered with the Department of Transportation and has a DOT number. There are plenty of fly by night movers or haulers who will quote you a low price and then either demand more money to unload or even abscond with your belongings. And if your furnishings are damaged or a piece is missing, there is no recourse for you to collect.

And even some of those are bad. Moving companies can be a real crap shoot. So much depends on the crew you get. I used the same company 2 years apart. First crew was top notch. Two years later, the crew was marginal at best, damaging freshly finished hardwood floors and cosmetic damage to some appliances, etc. None was enough to pursue, but they were hacks.

Apart from that, I also know of another company that was a horror show for an employee that worked under me about 10 years ago that moved from MA to NJ. They broke all kinds of stuff, and refused to do squat. After one conversation, they wouldn't return any of her calls or mine (the company paid for the move).

I've been involved with many moves, both cross-country and short distance. Gentle Giant is the ONLY company that I have NEVER heard a bad story about. They are not cheap by any means, but in experience they are very good at what they do. Can't hurt to call for a quote!
