Affordable housing as disappeared in NH. And rental apartments are in extremely short supply.

Because of the pandemic, real estate is way overpriced now.

Heating costs are significant and our electric rates are very high.

No one has mentioned property taxes yet? They are high and will only continue to increase.

Pros.
No sales tax.
No income tax.
No tax on investments.
Gun laws. What gun laws ?
Knife laws. What knife laws?
You can carry a sword if you want.
Car insurance not required by law.
Hunting on Sunday allowed by law.
Cold snowy winters enhance winter sports.
We have constutional carry, and a strong castle defense law.
Rapists, arsonist's and kidnappers can be shot on sight - legally by law. (Yes really check our RSA's)
Liquor stores right off the highway on the Massachusetts border with on & off ramps. Live free or die !

How many of those things actually affect anyone on a day-to-day basis? The taxes, yes, but you failed to mention our RE taxes. Has anyone here actually shot an arsonist or kidnapper? Carried a sword? The state just closed 10 liquor stores and it certainly isn't convenient to drive to the Mass border to buy a bottle of sherry.

The single biggest issue that outweighs everything else, both pro and con, is the lack of affordable housing, unless, of course, you're an out-of-stater with >$1M in equity in your current house in NJ and can afford to build a McMansion in the middle of a quaint NH village.

Exclamation There's no problem which cannot be made worse by government intervention

I shot a very aggressive groundhog yesterday, does that count? State says they might tell me whether or not she was rabid sometime between now and 2022.

If you can't find sherry at your local independent beer and wine retailer, you're shopping in the wrong place. As for hard liquor, the state went from 79 locations to 68, so it isn't like you can't find a booze source closer to you than MA.

My property tax bill is just under what I was paying in my previous state, and RE tax is less than I was paying in state income taxes so my total state and local tax burden dropped by half.

I'd rather live with the very recently developed issue with housing prices than see how the government tries to fix the "lack of affordable housing".

I'd rather see some Jersey emigree erect a McMansion in the middle of my quant NH village (likely reducing my RE taxes in the long term) than see the village forced to issue permits for high-density development on that same lot.

Obviously we run with different crowds. I personally know two guys who will carry a sword from time to time and yes armed citizens have shot assalints in the past or at least held a perpeterator at gunpoint until cops arrive. Nothing states you need to patrol looking for potential criminals but with most of the population widely disbursed a police response will be deyayed and its refreshing to know if you're involved in a lawfull shoot, theres a "hold harmless" clause written into the RSA's preventing you from getting sued (or arrested) it happens from time to time. Criminals know they're targets of oppurtunity here and tend to stay away. When's the last time you saw any rioting / burning here ? Nobody has. We value personal freedom here. we don't even let the police do no-knock warrents here because two cops got shot by citizens a few years ago.

As for housing, there's homes in the 100K-200K range if you know where to look. They ain't gonna be sitting on much over a guarter acre, but they're out there. Frankly, I wouldn't buy a single thing in Massachatwosheets. I like to buy local and keep the local economey going.

What happens if that Jersey emigree and others like them want more municipal services and vote for progressive, leftist politicians? We begin to lose what makes New Hampshire a good place to live.

So you don't carry a sword or shoot arsonists regularly either?

The only thing you can buy for those prices now are an old mobile home or seasonal camp.

Yep, extending the water & sewer lines, and adding sidewalks and streetlights cost money. And unless that new house is assessed for $1M, the town won't get back enough in tax money to pay for their 2 kids now enrolled in the school system, and the taxpayers will have to pick that up too. Then they won't like the school, but if they can get their just-moved-here-from-CT neighbor elected to the schoolboard, they can work on adding a lot of enrichment programs to the school.

Beware the RE tax escalation. Mine have gone up >60% in 6 years, primarily to pay for the school system. Some of it went to legit things, like HVAC and plumbing renovations, some of it went for fluff.
