Well I've made a few postings doing initial research into South Jersey (Cherry Hill - Mt. Laurel area). But now it's official - my company will be transferring me in early 2008.

I have a young family, a 1 year old and 4 year old and we're from the midwest, so it's a big move. We're excited (and mildly nervous!!) but on the whole, really looking forward to it.

Thanks to all of those who have posted replies to my questions...especially Dan Castello who provided a short list of SJ towns in the region I'm looking for:

1. Moorestown (pricey but the nicest)
2. Evesham Township
3. Voorhees
4. Marlton
5. Cherry Hill
6. Mt.Laurel

Any towns I'm missing? We're looking for good schools, plenty of shopping (Home Depot / Lowe's / Target etc) safe neighbourhoods and good highway access into metro Philly. There will be (very) occasional drives (one a month or less) into Jersey City,so access to 295 / NJ Turnpike is also key.

Thanks!

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the above. They are all great places that are convenient to everything. I'm in Cherry Hill and am one mile from 295 and 1/2 a mile from the PATCO train into Philly.
Just so you know....Marlton is part of Evesham Twp.

You may also want to consider Haddonfield, NJ which has great schools, walkable downtown, and train station to Philly. However, the houses are mostly older and very expensive

Thanks JerzBoy and invertigo....my wife and I are heading to SJ on Saturday for a couple of days just to have a look around (I've been many times on business but my wife has never been to metro Philly or SJ area).

We won't start the house search until Jan but want to check out communities to narrow our search. Any recommendations for a great breakfast spot for Sunday morning in any of these places?

Thanks again for your help!!!!

No problem. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help you as best I can. As for breakfast, the Cracker Barrel on Rt. 73 in Mt. Laurel is good and cheap, but expect a wait on Sunday morning.

The areas you've picked are close to shopping and the highways.

We were out that way yesterday, driving on route 73 from route 70. The traffic was pretty thick, and while it's not where I would want to live, I can understand others liking it due to the location and being so close to everything.

You'll have the Moorestown mall, along with the other strip malls behind it (Circuit City, Best Buy, Staples, the only Comp USA left in NJ, Mikasa, Lines & Things, Ross, 2 craft stores as well as Shop Rite, plus tons of other stores) then you are only a few minutes from the Cherry Hill Mall, BJ's & Costco wholesale clubs; a Super Target. as well as tons of stores on Rt 73 & rt 38. I drive about 40 minutes just for the shopping.

You are also right by the Turnpike and 295. The Philly airport is very close and for the times you have to go to Jersey City, you won't have to drive far to get to the highway.

Map of Moorestown. This will show you how close everything is. I used the mall as the starting point.

Here is the Cherry Hill Mall area

If you look at this map of Mount Laurel, you will see Centerton Rd. This is a large strip mall with Costco wholesale club, Super Target, Bed Bath Beyond, Wegmann's & Acme (food stores)

If you travel south down rt 73, there is the Promenade at Sagemore, which has Smith & Hawkins, Victorias Secret, and more shopping. There are also other strip malls around it.

Over by the Promenade at Marlton is Virtua West Jersey Hospital, which is a great hospital. I live about 45 minutes from it and use it for my back surgeries and if I had to be brought to an Emergency Room, that's where I would go.

stinkmuffin,

I grew up in Medford/marlton..and it was a really nice area with great schools. I go back to visit my parents alot. But the traffic has gotten so bad there..just a heads up...I know it is bad everywhere..I ended up moving to Pitt<real midwest feel> and MD..and I think I lost touch with how bad traffic can be!! My dad had said it was getting really bad and when I came back to visit..I saw just how bad. ..But it does have great schools and a lot of shopping!

We are actually moving back to the area..I didn't want to be in that much traffic and wanted a less hectic area...We ended up buying a house in Mullica hill. Schools are great from my research. Now it doesn't have the shopping. It does have a cute main street. But it seems very family oriented and the people seemed very friendly. The area is growing , so the shopping will come..although I kinda hope it stays away ..takes away from the niceness of the area..but I do need a Target. Anyhow, just something else to consider if you can't find something in the areas you are looking.

The taxes are high 10,000-12,000..but you do get more house and land.. And 295 and the turnpike are extremely close.

Good luck!!!
