Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. Frankgn87 - whew, that is good to hear that this is normal. I wonder when the water table will go back to its usual level.
The next task is to divert the sump drainage to a different area.
And wait for that muddy mess to dry out so that it can be fixed and reseeded. In that situation, would you remove all of that dried mud and replace completely with topsoil?
I live in Collingswood; the water table is high in normal conditions. I paid to have my yard dug up (by hand because I foolishly installed a sprinkler system before I did it) and have a whole new PVC line run from the sump to the street. It was expensive, but it has been the best money I spent on the house in the past few years with all of these hurricanes, storms, etc. I actually had them install a switch in my drain line to let it route to the sewer line in the unlikely event that the drain to the street ever becomes compromised and the basement gets wet (this is illegal as was suggested). I haven't had to use that switch yet. My basement has been very dry with the new line. Beforehand, my line to the street collapsed and the sump would run constantly as water would just flow back into the basement. You may have a similar issue if the water is pooling right next to your house and moving downward towards your basement floor.
It's definitely worth running a dedicated line to the street as suggested. Also, keep in mind that you'll be in better shape for melting snow if your yard is still covered and the street is clear.
PM me if you want the name of the company who did the work.
I'm new to NJ and new to sump pumps / french drains / permeable driveways. You should be able to redirect that water elsewhere. Also think about the winter and your discharge line not freezing.
