I'd recommend The Bernards Inn, in Bernardsville https://www.bernardsinn.com/ Top notch place, perfect ambiance for a romantic meal.

If you are used to chain operations like The Melting Pot, it is possible that you may not like independent restaurants.

However, in the event that you are adventurous enough to venture away from a chain restaurant, I can second the recommendation of The Black Forest Inn in Stanhope. While it is nominally a German restaurant, the menu is really more Continental in nature, and everything is really, really good!
