The most convient place to live in all of Central NJ is Bridgewater, just look at a map and you can see how centrally located the twp. is. From where I live I 287 is 2 miles . I 78 is 4 miles, the Raritain Valley Commuter rail is 2.5 miles. I am just far enough from the highways that I have 0 traffic noise. Almost every possible store and hundreds of good restaurants are just a 10 min drive (without any traffic) The shools are very high rated and my kids did not have any problem getting accepted to major colleges.
We have houses for sale from 350K to 2M and the taxes are no worse than any other place in NJ. (their all high)

A lot of people will tell you why their town is better than B'Water but you can't argue about convience. Hundreds in B'Water commute to NYC every day.

Good luck with your hunt.

I heard just now that the state of NJ does not permit a family with child to stay in a 1 bedroom apt.. Is that right?
I think only a child under age two can live in a one bedroom...

Thanks for the info juliann1977..

Emanon, Bridgewater sounds like a nice place. Can you suggest some apartments or good areas in Bridgewater for us ? Also how far a commute is it to NY ? And I assume from your post that it has a low crime rate ..

The best areas of Bridgewater is the areas North of Rt. 22 and inside the 287 loop. There are some apts. right on Rt 22 just behing the Houlihans restaurant but I don't know the name of them. B'Water is a large twp. and some areas are not as good as others. Findern and Bradley Gardens are not the best. It is about 35 miles to NYC via I 78 & NJTP

We are looking for a safe town , and a place where there are good schools nearby for our kid. Not to mention easy commuting to NY..
Please help. Looking over the internet is not helping at all.
How is Secaucaus , North Arlington, Edison ? How about Jersey City ?Is it very expensive ?
Move to Princeton, NJ area. Easy commute (train or bus). Top schools. Great place to live. Manageable commute via train or bus. Excellent schools. Great living. I've done it for 44 years.

i agree with previous post. Princeton area is best: east commute, top schools and with great diversity. These are the towns you may want to take a look: princeton, plainsboro, west windsor, cranbury, south brunswick and montgomery. if commute is not a big issue for you, you may also look at south of princeton.

How will you be commuting to nyc ?
You will have to factor that cost into your budget as well

If you plan on driving you have to factor in traffic and most of all your tolls, gas and parking in the city (not worth driving into city)

If you are taking NJ Transit (Bus or Train) it could run you at least 150 +
depending on what town you decide on

Thumbs up Consider Hunterdon County just north of Trenton Train

You can commute to NYC from anywhere within 8 miles of the Trenton to NYC train station and have a lifestyle of peace and culture appealing to both kids and adults. Trees, country roads, Delaware River, antiques, flea markets, art galleries, fantastic restaurants, diverse-minded population, fine schools, etc etc. It doesn't get any better in NJ. The towns to consider are Lambertville, Hopewell, Titusville, Washington Crossing, and on the PA side of the river there's New Hope, Yardley, and Newtown. Big box stores are accessible via I-95 but they aren't in your face if you live in the towns listed.
Real estate taxes are much less on the PA side of the Delaware.
-Good luck
