Does anyone have information, experiences or thoughts to share on moving to the new Gateway apartments in Carteret? Is the area safe? Is there alot of crime, murder, theft? I am from NY and do not know the area at all, however have read really terrible reviews about Carteret. I'm just curious before I make such a big move. I did visit once and it isn't very easy on the eye however the rental rates at Gateway are unbeatable.
Just speaking in general, here. But I'm curious, I DID look it up, and the prices don't really seem so low to me. They are run by Kaplan, which is the company that also owns my complex in North Brunswick. Kaplan had some TERRIBLE people working management a few years ago, but they have really turned the place around lately, with their staff being very responsive and supportive. So as fare as Kaplan goes, I give them a thumbs-up.
The prices are right in line with what I'm paying at my location. Why do you think that's unbeatable?
Yeah. I wouldn't say it's a crime-ridden area, but even though there's a lot of new development there, it's still a very ugly place. You'll still be surrounded by all those oil tanks and stuff around there and you can smell Linden from miles away.
Stay in North Brunswick. I couldn't have picked a better place when I moved here.
There's a reason they're so cheap- Carteret was a nice, blue-collar town 40-50 years ago when my parents grew up there, but even then, most people didn't venture near the area where those apartments are. It's not like it's the projects, but it's not someplace I'd live- especially if you've got kids and need to use the schools.
Don't know if you have moved there yet....but.....if you didn't.....don't....
I grew up in Carteret and have family that still lives there...it used to be nice but I'd rather live in the devil's a**hole than to live there now.
Pollution - Two major chemical plants and a major refinery in a VERY small town (4 sq miles!)... You will be reminded of the pollution everyday. Plus the NJ Turnpike runs right through the town and tons of trucks come through.
Schools - The schools are amazing....in an awful way. They test horrible and have well below average attendance due to a huge truancy issue. Alot of Newark NJ transplants and Newark residents use their families addresses to register there children in Carteret schools while they live in Newark.
Crime - many house break ins... For a small pop (20,000 or so).. There are enough sketch people to go around.. It's not uncommon to hear about shootings... More than enough to make it uncpmfortable for such a small town...
There have been 4 or 5 murders over the last ten years. I believe back in 98 there was a couple garbage bags dumped RIGHT behind the Carteret PD stuffed with bodyparts. It was reported the fingertips and toes were removed as well... Which is another issue... There are WAYYYY too many cops in Carteret for all these thongs to be happening.
There used to be a big prostitution problem too but since there tore down the main strip in the Chrome section it hasn't been since. They tore down all the abandoned storefronts and tried to build "luxury" townhomes there.....right next to the slaughterhouse LOL. Yes they also have a slaughterhouse.
Another funny thing is the general contractors for the brownstones underbid on the job and the job halted mid construction. And they still remain unfilled to this day...and right next to them.....they put new affordable housing.
No matter how much they pump the renovation all they are doing is polishing a turd. Because even though the strip was torn down....make no mistake the hood is still there
Oh btw, the gateway apts are smack dab in the hood.
It just hurts to see my stomping grounds become such a landfill... Oh yea...speaking of landfills.... You have a grandview of them rigt across the Hudson lmao.
Is there a different between Carteret and West Carteret?
