My girlfriend attends Montclair State and it would be useful for us to be able to both jump on a bus/train and go to our respective areas. We just don't want to have to walk more then a few mins to our stop.
Whether it's an apartment building etc we don't know where to look other than craigslist.
PLEASE HELP!

There are bus lines that serve Montclair State University (the #28, #191, and #705), so that increases your options a little bit, since you don't have to be right near the train line. See this map:
NJ Bus map for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren Counties
There are also bus lines that travel to NYC from Montclair, which is useful at times when the train service is infrequent.
Also, if you would prefer to be near the train, I would recommend being east/south of Montclair State University, since the frequency of service is much less west of the MSU station.
