There are legitimate ones, usually they are non-profit, and they are usually not the ones who advertise heavily. Try the state site under division of Consumer Affairs to start.

depending on what you need to do and how deep you are, all the counselors do is set up a structured payment process.

if you need assistance, ocnjgirl is correct...plenty of non profits. consumer affairs is the right place to look.

Or you could try calling your creditors and trying to set uo structured payments or a settelment on your own. That is all most of these companies do.

If they have gone to collection agencies they will generally not work with a credit counseling company either. Once you have hit collections you are pretty much out of luck.
