Hello Everyone.
I am posting this thread to ask if anyone knows where to go for treatment for ADD at a low cost in Bergen County. I have been classified since I was a kid. Now at 30, I am having a very difficult time. I started nursing school full time in September. That is when I really noticed the difficultly ..
I did not report to my school at the start I have this. I am embarrassed by it like most people who have ADD. I really thought I could function well without meds or treatment. Unfortunately, I can not and did not pass a class. It was only by 4 points but I have to wait to go back now to retake the class.
I did go somewhere that advertised as an ADD Center but it was a therapist and the nurse practitioner who prescribed Adderall to me was very cold. There also were no other services provided for ADD.
I found 2 places. One in Cedar Knolls and one at FDU. They both charge a lot of money for treatment. I do need a re evaluation and meds desperately before I return to school.
Does anyone know of a place I can go for this?

I'm not sure where you are in Bergen County, but how about West Bergen Mental Health or any of their counterparts? Are you in South Bergen? There are places that have a sliding scale.http://www.bergenhealth.org/mental/bcmhsystem.html I hope this helps. Good luck with your treatment and with your nursing career.

They all have psychiatrists on staff, but also nurse clinical specialists. The centers are all facing funding challenges....nurse clinical specialists is the way to go. Please note that the Bergen County program has some sort of a program for "affordable medication" too.

Do you need just to be on meds, or do you need therapy also? If you just need the meds, go to your regular doctor and ask him to prescribe generic Adderall for you. If you need a therapist also, good luck...I have health insurance and I still can't find one! Pretty much none of them participate in any health plans so you have to pay an arm and a leg out of pocket.

I know there are counseling centers out there that work on a sliding scale, but unless there's a Physchiatrist on staff, they can't prescribe.

Check out Attention Deficit Disorder | ADHD Symptoms, Medication, Treatment, Diagnosis, Parenting ADD Children and More: Information from ADDitude. It's a paper magazine called ADDitude but also a very good website for people with ADD (I have it too but choose not to go the med route for various reasons). Not only can you get good tips on doing well in school with ADD, natural supplements, etc, but there are also many resources listed for help with ADD, including medical help, as well as forums where you can find out how other people got help.

You can do it, even if you don't get drugs, so don't give up. I quit high school because I fell so far behind, but as an adult graduated from a prestigious university Magna *** Laude. You can find methods of studying, organization, etc that work for YOU (emphasized because they may seem unconventional or even counter-intuitive to people who don't struggle with ADD).

Without insurance, the med choices are pretty much limited to stimulants like Adderall, which I won't take as I have an addictive personality (very common in ADD), and if you look at ADD forums there are many people who can't get off the stimulants. Strattera, which is non-stimulant, is very expensive and had one side effect for me that to me was unacceptable. It will remain expensive for some time, as the patent isn't up until 2018, so no generics until then.

If you have to pay, you might be better off with a life coach than an ADD clinic, which IMO are mostly based around prescribing drugs.
