My boyfriend and I are looking to move back to his home state of NJ, but are not quite sure about what city we want to live in. He wants to go back to Elizabeth because it's cheap. From my first impression, I really didn't care for the city, but it's an option if I'm just living there.
If someone could give us suggestion of areas to look into, that would be great. Here are some things that we're looking for:
-A 1 bedroom apartment for less than $1000
-Urban
-Quick commute to Manhattan (for day trips on the weekends)
-"Safe." Really I just want to be able to walk home at night and not feel threatened or have my car broken into.
-Diversity in population. I'm Asian, he's Hispanic.
We don't have any children or planning on having any for a while, so we don't care for the school systems.
Honestly, Elizabeth isn't a great neighborhood. And it's extremely industrial, so it literally smells like crap. I'm convinced that Elizabeth and Linden are the towns responsible for the state's nickname of "Dirty Jersey".
If you're looking for a one-bedroom apartment for less than $1000, though, that's what you're going to be limited to--not-so-nice/not-so-safe areas. You do get what you pay for.

Disagree. There have to be close to a dozen different apartment complexes in Edison and Woodbridge where you can get a 1-bedroom apartment for less than $1000 a month. Both towns have a lot of relatively inexpensive housing.

May just be a matter of definition. I would not consider either Edison or Woodbridge to be urban.
You will have to make sacrifices for that price. Over ten years ago when we moved to NJ we rented an apartment in Springfield. Not urban or diverse, but a quick busride into Manhattan. We had a two bedroom for $1100.00.
