Back up in North Jersey. Middlesex County is nice enough, but it's not the shore and it's not close enough to the action. It's like a pass through county to somewhere else.
Plus most towns here lack a real downtown...what the hell?
Probably Westfield/Ridgewood since they have nice downtowns, are safe, good school systems, have transportation to the city, aren't too congested (when compared to Essex Co). Or in one of the beautiful Victorian homes (as long as not in a flood zone) in Cranford.
I'm lucky enough to live in the best part of the state- the Somerset Hills. It's basically the Versailles of New Jersey.
I lived for over 20 years in the Somerset Hills and I never got the feeling it was the Versailles of NJ. Then again I've never been to Versailles.
It is a great place to live and most outside of Somerset have no idea what it's like to live in horse country.
I love the Far Hills and Chester areas. I would have moved there a long time ago if I could just convince my wife.
