I've noticed a dramatic increase in the number of freight trains using the 'Southern Division Line' of the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway. It wasn't long ago that the line through Butler would see one or two trains per week; Wednesday night being 'freight night'. Now, it seems like there are three or more trains every night! Does anyone know why so many trains are using the line now?

I suspect if you post your question here: RAILROAD.NET • View forum - New York, Susquehanna & Western - Past and Present

You'll probably get more input from people that really know.

Not sure but I'd love to know as well.

Activity at the Ridgefield Park yard has been lively, love seeing those big yellow locos rumble through town!

One of the nice things about city-data is that if the community can't provide the answer, participants help find it elsewhere. Thanks for the link. I took your suggestion.

My home is a couple miles from the track -- so the whistling and rumbling isn't excessive. No idea why, but I take comfort in hearing the trains go by. (Maybe its a psychobabble fond-memories-of-childhood thing?)

Very well could be. Growing up near the Northern Branch was fun, getting to catch the couple of trains a day. Susie Q (love that nickname for NYS&W) was always the special treat when I was younger and dad would take us down to Ridgefield Park and Bogota and see those yellow GP-18's do their thing.

Have you thought about the possibility it might be used for detours, perhaps something to do with Sandy? Has been used for that quite a few times before. Maybe short-term storage of rail equipment until the storm cools off? I'm not aware of any actual new rail business that would increase the train count so dramatically.
