Hello. My husband is deciding on grad schools, and we have narrowed it down to two - one in Boston, and one in NYC. From the research that I have done, it seems as if we would most likely live in New Jersey and he would commute to school.
I would like to get a good picture, specifically of Jersey City and Bayonne... Here are the specifics the sticky asks for:
Where are you coming from? - Nashville
Why are you moving? - My husband will be attending Grad School in Manhattan, Upper West Side
Where will you be working ? I work from home.
Will you buy or rent? Rent
What is your budget ? 2500
What kind of place are you looking for ? 3 bedrooms
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Me, husband, 4 kids (4,6,8, 10)
Do you need/want good public schools? No - I homeschool.
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in: Safe, close to public transportation, diverse
List three things that are important to you in order of importance: safety, proximity to NYC, kids sports (baseball and ballet)
I appreciate any advice that you can give me. Lived on the west coast most of my life, living in Nashville now, ready to get out of the South!
Hoboken is a good option and right next to downtown J.C. More like a slice of Manhattan with plenty of bars/restaurants. PATH trains/buses to NY as well. It can be pricey however.
Downtown Jersey City is apartments and high-rises and is generally a safe area with access to NYC by PATH trains in 15 minutes. Some other parts of town are sketchy.
#1 on my list with your requirements would be Rutherford. Train right there and an easy commute to Manhattan.
#2 Also consider Upper Montclair, but not as close as Hoboken or Jersey City. Does have a train to Manhattan but it's longer than Rutherford.
