I am currently living in Bayside, NY. I became fed up with the house search in LI (Great Neck, Manhasset, Garden City, East Williston, these are the best school districts and are the only areas I would consider on LI) because all you can get is shoebox or tear down in these areas for under a million dollars. So, I decided to bite the bullet and started looking for a home in Robbinsville/West Windsor, NJ. I know the area well, my wife’s family lives in the area and I like it. Also a very large home in West Windsor/Robbinsville is $750K-800K. A similar type home in a good area of LI would easily cost a few million dollars with double the taxes.
My commute today to NYC from Bayside is 1hr door to door. I can walk to the LIRR now. The ride on the train is only 25min. It’s a cake walk. The most annoying part is getting from Penn to Office. This can’t be changed no matter where I live.
If I moved to Garden City, LI the door to door would be about 1:20 – 1:30 min door to door. To Princeton Junction it would take about an hr 1:45 to 2hrs door to door. (Did a test run to Hamilton Station) So it would be 20-30mins longer. No big deal in my opinion. Easy ride, sleep, read a book, watch a movie, play a game on your phone. Plus my work hrs are very good. In at 9AM leave at 4:30PM every day.
From Princeton Junction I would be on the 7:27AM express train to Penn every day. The problem is parking at the Princeton Junction station. I sent an e-mail to the West Windsor Parking authority. They told me that the Vaughn Permit Lot never fills up and has general parking for non permit holder from the attendant in the kiosk at the entrance to this lot from 6:30 AM until 11:30 AM. Is this realistic or are they pulling my leg?
Is there a waiting list for a parking permit?
There is a waiting list for all lots at this time. The approximate wait time for Wallace Road lot is 8 years, Alexander Road lot 6 years, and Vaughn Drive lot 4 years. The Wallace Road and Vaughn Drive lots are available to residents of West Windsor Township only.
Wallace Road daily lot General public (without regard to residency) Typically full early every weekday morningWallace Road daily lot General public (without regard to residency) Typically full early every weekday morning
Daily overflow accommodated in Vaughn Drive permit lot General publicOpen 6:30 AM weekdays and subject to availability until 11:30 AM
I would be shocked that there are spots everyday, but I haven't parked there in years
A new parking lot is in the process of being built now, where the old recycling center used to be.
I don't know a time-frame for completion or who will be able to park there once it's finished. You might be able to find out that info on the Township's website.
Here is the email I recieved today from the WWPA. I Xed out the person's name. I'm just trying to get confirmation from the daily commuters who use this lot after 7AM.
I heard the new lot will be ready in spring of 2013.

You can always find parking in the Vaughn permit lot. The attendant is there at 6:30 am and leaves at 11:30 am
Most of the single family homes are of same distance from Hamilton station as well. Did you check that one ?
Also i know of my neighbor who parks at a nearby parking lot for 400 bucks a month outside Princeton Junction station.
That's not bad either. All the best!

Cheers!
400 a month? I hope that is a joke. I park in Hamilton and was thinking of moving a bit further north next year and parking in Princeton. They need a garage like Hamilton has.
