There are a few other places. Northern Maine is one such area. We are looking for property in the Great North Woods near Moosehead Lake (about 45 Degrees North Latitude). It only gets up to the 80s tops, and even that's only in August. Ice out on Moosehead isn't complete until early May-the nights in June are cool enough to sit comfortably by a fire or to wear longsleeves.
I remember driving through Jackman (on my way to Quebec City) on September 28th, 2000, and the temperature there that day, for a high, was 53 degrees. I was coming from Bear Spring, and I was totally miserable there that week. I thought that if am going to be cold and miserable, at least let me do so in a really cool city, so I made the voyage to Quebec that day. It wasn't any warmer there.
Since I was 14 at the time, that winter will live in my memory forever as "Heaven on Earth" Between the packed snow and ice that came afterwards our sled hill in the woods became more like a bobsled track. Those old steel runner sleds FLEW on that ice. We cleared snow off of a small pond in the woods and played hockey until we lost all of the pucks and had bonfires at our "fort" which was just down the trail from the pond. My friends and I had go-karts that were scavenged lawn tractors with the mowing decks removed and chains on the rear tires. Those were a blast in the snow.
I don't remember if it was 93/94 or 95/96, but my dad had switched a few years earlier from regular Army to the NJNG and he got called out. I remember my buddies and I out messing around in the snow and then a Humvee came around the corner. Dad was stopping home in between shuttling the doctors and nurses around and took us all for a ride. The thing I remember most was that all of the entrance/exit ramps on 295 were piled high with snow as the plows were just trying to keep the road itself clear. He showed us how Humvee's can make their own ramps, lol. Ah, our tax dollars at work.
Is this a North Jersey/South Jersey thing? My wife is from Sussex County and I am from just south of Trenton. Up until I met her I never heard anyone call it "sleigh riding."
Geez, I'm used to hearing about my weird NJ-ism terms now that we live in GA, but never from a fellow native. I grew up in Bergen County, and we built a home in Sussex Cty, but in both places it was called sleigh riding.

This happens often in my household. She says "Taylor Ham," I say "Pork Roll," she says "water," I say "wooder," etc... It's got to be a north vs. south thing-none of my friends growing up ever called it anything other than sledding.

Taylor ham all the way. For the longest time you couldn't find it far outside NJ. My mother used to send it to my brothers when they went to college in Boston. Now we can buy it in GA, out of the deli case, where it's called "pork roll".
