You're about the same age as me and I agree w/alot that you've said. I can speak of both school systems (NC & NJ) because I've experienced both. The School District we are in now (outside of Charlotte) has about a 70 point higher SAT average for all students over the school district I was in back in Jersey. There are good and bad school districts here just like NJ....
Also, in regards to weather/climate, the temps/heat index is just as hot in Charlotte on average or hotter, except the biggie is that since we are 650 miles further south, the summers last longer because cool/cold fronts don't penetrate the south as quickly as NJ....also, our temps at night usually cool down into the 60's here in Charlotte (since we have minimal heat island effect and we are 200+ miles from the coast, so temps are more extreme than places like Wilmington NC along the coast, where temps in the summer usually don't drop below 70.
Winters are different. The piedmont gets alot of cold rain and ice in the winter, w/cold air jamming against the appalachians, but maybe an inch or 2 a year of snow...we will get an occasional snowstorm once every 10 years, but since the sun is much stronger, it melts ALOT quicker than in Jersey..If you want snow here, you drive 2 hours to the mountains above 3000' and you'll see a ton of snow..
