Hi y'all.

I am contemplating a job offer in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. I would like to live in New Jersey, rent an apartment in a low crime area, with good schools, shopping etc etc. I dont want to commute more than an 1hr each way.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I would like to pay upto ~$1200 for a 1BD apartment. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
-Steve

Do you have children?

Working in Chelsea you should be able to take the PATH train without having to switch to the subway. See PATH - The Port Authority of NY & NJ for route maps, etc.

NJ Transit connects to the PATH at Hobken & Newark.

Take a look at www.njtransit.com to see which NJ Translit lines go into Newark & which ones go to Hoboken.

At Hoboken you can get right on the PATH (33rd Street line) that you'll need for Chelsea area.

At Newark you'll get on the WTC PATH line & have to switch for the 33rd Street line at Journal Square or Grove Street. Everytime you switch trains it adds time & hassle to your commute.

You can also take NJ Transit directly to Penn Station in Manhattan & hop the subway down to Chelsea.

Note that there are 2 Penn Stations, one in Newark, the other in New York (Manhattan.)

1200 is going to be a tall order in Hoboken, probably Downtown Jersey City as well. You might be able to get away with a 1 BR for 1200 in the journal square area of Jersey City.

Wouldn't everyone.

Sorry, this is really not realistic. You have no kids, so why worry about schools? Given that, there's Union City and Journal Square; neither is pretty, but they're both cheap and not high in crime. Journal Square is the easier commute by far.
