Hello All
My family and I were offered a house to live in Bayonne on Boatworks Drive near the 8th street rail. Just wanted to find out ifnthe neighborhood is worth moving into especially with two little ones. Is it safe , kid-friendly, and easily accessible to transportation into the city? Also the schools how are they and are the special need friendly?
Thanks for your input.
I would also like to know more information about Bayonne. I heard that it is a slightly close-minded city. Is it something minor or very severe? As an African-American woman looking for cost efficient but safe areas, I just want to be careful that I do not move to an area where I could be targeted or made to feel uncomfortable.

I have a coworker who lives in that area. The commute to (and especially from) the city is long and frustrating, especially if you stay in the city later than 6:30PM. You have to take the PATH train out of the city, which is fine, and then connect to the light rail, which has really bad frequency of service after 7 PM. My coworker can make it to our office in Herald Square in 1 hour, 15 minutes on a good day. Going home is worse and usually takes 1 hour, 30 minutes or more. You can probably find a place in a nicer suburb, farther away from the city yet have a shorter commute than that.
The Boatworks Drive area had very bad flooding during Hurricane Sandy. So there is a risk that future storms could cause more flooding and damage.
On the plus side, the area is safe and quiet. I don't know if the schools are very good though.

It doesn't seem that closed-minded. There's definitely a lot of Hispanics over there, and it's not like there's no blacks at all over there.

The transportation is decent, but outside of rush hour, the buses and trains don't run that frequently. (Generally once every 20 minutes). You can either take the light rail to Exchange Place for the PATH, or the #10 to Journal Square for the PATH. (The #10 stops along JFK Blvd)
There's also the #119, which runs along JFK Blvd, and goes through the Lincoln Tunnel to the PABT, but that mostly runs during rush hours. The #120 stops on Avenue C, and runs through the Holland Tunnel to Lower Manhattan (again, during rush hours).
Of course, the #119 & #120 schedules vary based on traffic in their respective tunnels to Manhattan. For what it's worth, the #119 uses a bus lane to get to the Lincoln Tunnel, while the #120 doesn't have a lane in the Holland Tunnel. So it might be better to use the PATH for Downtown, and the bus for Midtown.
