Here's what I keep in my wallet. I live in upper Glen ridge. The town is 3 blocks wide I could take a jitney to GR train station, walk to Bloomfield and take DeCamp bus 33/88 on Broad St, or walk to Montclairs Walnut station.

I take the train in the morning and bus at night if after 7pm. My commute at night is a real 50 minutes door to door. Morning is very difficult to break an hour 5. Montclair is closer to an hour 30 assuming you are walking 10 minutes to a station.

This is an HONEST schedule from when my front door closes to when I walk in my office lobby. Many people BS their door to door. 39 min train and 30 min bus on paper still translate to a decent commute. You have transfers, Penn Station gridlock, etc. I work 2 blocks north of OP
